Non-slip bases make x-wing way better. I made my own on the cheap, and now you can too: https://imgur.com/a/I7xkEK7

You can also buy them online from a bunch of places, like here: https://www.escapadegaminggear.com/figurspel/grip-inserts

True. I've been using self adhesive cabinet bumpers produced by Everbilt. You can get them online at Amazon and EBay or at hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowes here in the US.

Alternatively, Walmart also sells cheap mouse pads that are close to the right thickness. They used to be perfect, but now they're slightly thinner. Just add a piece of card stock in between the base and mouse pad and you're good to go!

Or stick the mouse pad on top of the washer so you get grip and weight!

So do you then house and transport these in boxes with magnetic strips? I’ve been doing that with 28mm to good effect.

I just bought some square flat bumper from amazon. They are the perfect height, stick out like 0.1mm. For small base I cut them in half and put them in the corners, leaves room to glue a big washer in the middle. Also tried round bumpers, but flat works better, more rigid.

Edit: I had posted a link from my order history but apparently the seller has now changed to round. Well anyway if you can find 10x10x2.5mm square flat bumpers they work great

I fill my bases to the brim with Silcone Rubber.

They are so non-slip you have to get used to them. One order of this stuff will do probably over 100 bases, so go in with a couple friends and make an evening project.

The thing with the washer options is that it makes the thing so much heavier that you have to remember to move your ships by grabbing the base or the peg will just give, and I ALWAYS forget...

I tested my diy bases out last night and they were great - much more resilient to accidental bumps, and impervious to sliding around while I was using a template. Now I don't need to squish the base down onto the mat while I put a template in the front guides, because the ship base will hold itself in place on its own. This is a massive improvement and I highly recommend it.

I usually pick things up by the base anyway (I don't want to damage the ship, especially if I've repainted it). I have a lot of super loose pegs already anyway which would fall out even without the washers.

I personally dislike when players don’t hold down their ships before inserting the movement template, it drastically increases the chances of the player not putting the template in straight, or inadvertently pushing the template against the nub on one side (drastically skewing the final position of the ship in some cases) and is done so quickly that before I can correct them they lift the ship up and the original location is lost. I say this in general, not to point you out specifically of course.

Not that I feel that players are doing it intentionally to cheat or anything but a couple extra seconds to ensure the template is in correctly maintains the integrity of the game I feel.

As for non-slip advice, there is a good amount of different solutions at most hardware stores which is great for custom solutions to slipping ship bases.

That's fair. You still have to insert the template slowly in this case, and holding the base with a finger is still an option - but now when I remove my finger I don't have to worry about the base sticking to it and moving about.
