Buy Deluxe sets only or finish a cycle?

By Herr Style, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

I’ve only just got into this and got the Core Set off the wife for Christmas, and on a whim at my LGS, bought The Circle Undone (Choice between this and The Forgotten Age do hope I chose wisely!).

My question is do I need to finish the Circle Undone cycle, or once I have completed the actual CU on its own, can I call it quits and for example start The Dunwich Legacy? Or get to say mythos pack 3 (The Wages of Sin) and Stop there without feeling that I haven’t reached the end of the story? Reason being is possibility of not finding a mythos pack due to unavailability.

Also is it worth getting Return to the Night of the Zealot before moving on too?

Thanks!

You need the full cycle for the full story.

I would definitely advise getting the rest of Circle Undone if you’re able. If there are any out of stock packs it shouldn’t be too long before they’re reprinted again, but having the first two scenarios of several campaigns would be irritating, I think. I also reckon you chose wisely not picking up Forgotten Age yet, it’s a really punishing campaign until you have sufficient experience to figure out how to tackle it, not for beginners!

Return to Night of the Zealot is really good, but not an essential early purchase at all. I think you’d get more mileage at this point from completing TCU or getting another deluxe with more investigators.

Finally, welcome! Hope you enjoy it!

Yeah. In this game the story is the King, so full cycles Are way to go!

You can just get all the deluxe boxes first which would give you the maximum variety of investigators to play. Though themes introduced in the player cards in those deluxes are complimented by the cards released in the cycle. Also you'll basically play the first act of a story and not finish it. So it would be like watching the first two episodes of a TV show and not finishing that season. You'll get what it's about but you won't get any meaningful closure to the choices you made or the resolutions you reach. So you'll be doing yourself a disservice by playing the game that way. That said you can do it mechanically that way. You can play any scenario standalone.

Welcome to the game!

The general recommendation is to play everything in order, starting with Dunwich, but we've seen people start with other deluxe sets and have a blast because this game is insanely fun. Starting with CU is totally plausible and is also a very interesting choice for us veterans and I hope you revisit us someday to regale us of the experience.

The Return to ... sets are for spicing up campaigns after they get stale. They also contain player cards. We are currently awaiting the announcement of the Return to Forgotten Age set. I presume that Night of the Zealot isn't stale for you yet, so I'd wait on Return to Night of the Zealot unless getting those player cards is burning a hole in your wallet.

So, were I in your position and I liked the game enough, I'd either finish up CU or delay starting CU for now in order to buy and complete Dunwich with some extra CU player cards/investigators in the mix. But if you start CU and don't buy all the chapter packs, then you'll definitely feel like you left off somewhere.

I might keep Circle Undone under wraps for a while then and get the Dunwich Legacy, as The Dunwich Horror is one of my top five favourite mythos stories. Valentines is approaching soon, and I might ask my wife to buy me The Dunwich Legacy as a nice romantic gift lol.

I think the popular opinion is Path To Carcosa is the strongest story out of all the cycles. I think I agree with that, but I liked all the campaigns. The core set one was probably the weakest story, but it was also just trying to introduce you to the concept. Dunwich cycle does a good job of hitting alot of the notes from the original story and give you some pretty interesting scenario designs. The House Always Wins is fantastic as is Blood On The Alter.

We do get spoiled a bit when we buy things as they come out, and I remembered seeing some availability complaints in the Facebook group, so I did some research:

It does appear that Miskatonic Museum (Chp 3 for Dunwich) and For the Greater Good (Chp 4 for CU) are the only chapter packs out of stock on ffg's site.

I found both on Amazon for a $10 markup. Dunwich itself is out of stock through ffg, but is discounted on Amazon.

I've also heard that The Pallid Mask (chp 6 for Carcosa) can be problematic, but it's in stock now, so maybe the King in Yellow is calling to you after all.

Pretty sure that Miskatonic Museum you are seeing on Amazon is in Spanish (also appears to be copies in French available). I know because I've been trying to find a copy of this pack too.

I’ve just ordered off of Amazon a copy of Miskatonic University so I will let you know. If it’s French I will send it back, but everything looked ok. About a week ago I kept seeing it for CAD$41 but today it was down to CAD$26, and as it was the last one for sale I took the plunge.

I still need to buy a copy of The Dunwich Legacy, and earlier this week that took a bit of a beating when my wife suggested I buy a Dash Cam that I’d always wanted instead lol.

Oh well if I don’t get it for Valentines then I suppose I can keep playing NotZ using different characters for a while longer then.

For everybody looking for Miskatonic Museum: try amazon.co.uk. If you don't mind an extra week or so shipping, you can currently pick it up for about $20-21.

I managed to order Dunwich Legacy at last from the UK. Hopefully within the next week or so I will have that and the first two expansions!
