RitR Rewards and fleet point timing

By ArmadaMatt, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Maybe I've missed it in the rulebook, but when do upgrades and squadrons get added to your fleet's total point value? Is it when you earn the reward (Gain Rewards step)? I assume that's the case, but if so, does that mean if your fleet has say 245 points you couldn't take any new rewards that are more than 5 points? Would you have to remove an upgrade the campaign turn before to have a chance to earn new rewards in the future?

I understand this is a corner case, but want to figure this out before it comes up. I can see it happening easily if a player keeps gaining squadrons.

It's not a corner case at all, in our campaign is happening a lot. You add those points when you gain the reward and cannot exceed 250, but at that same instance you can also remove stuff. So if your fleet is at 245 and you want to add an upgrade/squadron of 10 points, you can remove a 5 points upgrade and the purchase the 10 points reward.

In the two campaigns I am in, we have read the rules in this manner; Let us assume we have a fleet worth 248 points. We win a battle at Yavin and in the Management Phase we gain the rewards we are entitled (Let's say we gain the 14 points worth of Ordnance upgrades). During the Refit and Expand Fleets, we need to remove items (perhaps the upgrades we just got) to bring fleet value to 250 or less. Following our example, we may drop a squadron to allow for the addition of an Ordnance upgrade to our fleet.

It is our understanding that as the Refit and Expand Fleets step is where upgrades are actually added to your fleet, the point total is not calculated until that step.

I've included the rules below that have us thinking that way:
Management Phase Step 3: Gain Rewards
On page 21 under "Location Rewards" the rules read "Upgrades are equipped or squadrons are added to the fleet during the Management Phase's 'Refit and Expand Fleets' step, described on page 18."

Management Phase Step 5: Refit and Expand Fleets
On page 18 we have "Players update the condition of their fleets during this step, including removing conditions, adding or removing forces, and equipping upgrades. A fleet's total value cannot exceed 250 points."

Hehe, this seems to be the norm with rules questions for this campaign: two different interpretations. 😎

Both are valid arguments. I tend to agree with @Lemmiwinks86 , but as I've done with a few things now, I'll open it to our group for discussion on how we want to handle it. We'll probably modify the rules a bit to follow @Fraggle_Rock 's suggestion.

Thanks guys!

@Lemmiwinks86 is pretty much doing the same thing I am, just in a slightly different way. The end result looks to be the same, I believe. :) In either case, I'm glad that the community is able to help you out @ArmadaMatt

Oops, you're right! I totally misread his comment. I'll blame it on being tired. Yeah, tired...

Talking about rewards... how does one earn a combined weapons team & offensive retrofit upgrade such as boarding engineers or troopers during the campaign? Is it enough if the planet shows one of the necessary symbols as a reward?

It’s best to rule it that way, yes.

I second Drasnighta on this one.
