Ugly Ships - advice?

By thinkbomb, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So... my players just found out about Ugly class ships. The ones that are just Frankenstien'd together from random ship parts, usually gaining the worst of both worlds. Example is the TYE-Wing: a TIE pod with Y-wing thrusters and the TIE fighter mortality rate.

The players want a custom ugly. They already decided they're naming it the Holy Diver (before thinking about what parts they hope to find).

So, its early in this campaign and an ugly fits their crew's personality. I'm definitely going to total their current ship and "reward" them an ugly. But that's not the real question.

The real question is how do you stat block an ugly?

Any advice welcome!

This might help:

EoTE/AoR Ugly Creation System.

The infamous ugly starfighters are a well-known fixture in many outer rim
pirate and smuggler gangs, although most are inferior to all but the worst
factory-built starfighters.
Each Ugly is comprised of Three major parts: The main body, the wings and the
engines, although some lack wings (mostly those that use Y-wing engines), and
some use a cockpit from a different craft than the main body. most uglies are
made using parts from two starfighters, although a rare few use parts from
freighters or occasionally airspeeders or else combine parts from three starfighters.
pick (or roll for) one component from each of the following tables. each will
have a number of values listed. at the the end, combine all of the listed
numbers to arrive at the ship's final stats. also included is a value for
weapon points, which are used later to determine the Ugly's armamant

Main Body:
Ship type: HT SS Sensor Range Ship's compliment Weapon Points Armor
Y-wing 6 3 Close	1 Pilot,(1 Gunner) 5 3
TIE 3 2 Close	1 Pilot 2 2
Z-95 4 2 Close 1 Pilot 3 3

Eta-2 2 2 Close 1 Pilot 3 2
C-73 3 3 Close 1 Pilot 1 2
Toscan 8-Q	4 3 Close 1 Pilot 3 3

Wings:
Ship type: HT SS Handling Weapon Points

Pinook 2 1 +0 1
T-16 1 1 +0/+1 0
Notes: Y-wing 'wings' must be selected if Y-wing engines are being used
Using a Y-wing body always reduces handling by one.

Note: No Ugly may have a handling value of greater than +2.

The easy approach is having them build it themselves using the ship building rules in fully operational. The work well for one-off custom creations.

If you really want to hammer home the mismatched nature of an ugly, you could reduce the difficulty of building it in return for adding automatic threats or despairs, meaning that when you're crudely bashing together mismatched sub-assemblies it's easy to make something that works, but tricky to make it work well.

I'm sure no one here would be going there to check out the less-than-legal copies of all of the books, right?

Uh... No? This was in a list of useful house rules and custom gear/ships/etc. a friend sent me.

Well, when you direct people to get burger patties out of the same freezer that holds the body of a murder victim, you can understand why some might raise an eyebrow.

Thanks a ton for the info, as well as which sourcebooks cover this. ^^

Since the characters in question are skullduggery runners, they'll probably Ugly up a mid-size rather than a fighter. But the logic here's going to serve as a solid foundation. ^__^

Larger Uglies can certainly work. **** the first Disney canon Ugly that I know of was the size of a large heavy cruiser, or small destroyer. It was patched together from parts of various separatist warship classes for an early anti-Imperial rebel group. More parts came from Providence class ships like Invisible Hand then any other type but there were peices and gear salvaged from other CIS warship classes as well.

I heard about this one! sounds screwball epic. lol

I always liked the Ugly concept but I didn't like the selection that appeared in Legends. It seemed like pretty every Ugly fighter type in Legends had modern parts. B-Wing bodies or X-Wing or TIE parts. I wanted to see older Uglies. Like Z-95 wings on an R-41 body or vice versa

this this is the vid that got our group down the rabbit hole in the first place. The host also bemoaned the legends lack of creativity, especially in comparison to the All Terrain Assault Tie seen in new comics (he calls out other crazies you'll prolly like)

The only ships missing from that video are the Uglies piloted by the pirates from Resistance .
