A New Hope. day by day, hour by hour?

I would prefer to just have studio canon (films and television shows) and apocrypha (everything else). Disney can license all manner of things as official products without slapping a big canon sticker. It keeps things clean and leaves the fans to their own devices. It only really matters if you are actually producing content for Disney. Otherwise, who cares?

The problems with that approach can be seen in the Star Trek franchise, which pretty much doesn't give two wet s###s about canon, not even within their own TV series. It was also how Lucasfilm originally handled things, which again lead to all sorts of contradictions and inconsistencies about events. After all, there were at least half a dozen different tales about how the Rebellion got their hands on the original Death Star plans long before Rogue One had so much as a first draft.

For better or worse, under Disney at least there's a greater degree of internal consistency amidst the various products, so you don't have several different people trying to re-tell the same story or creating contradicting accounts of various events. You obviously don't care much the same as Paramount doesn't care about internal consistency regarding Star Trek, but there's a fair number of Star Wars folks (many of whom don't themselves care about a dinky little RPG like this one) who do appreciate having that measure of internal consistency.

I think if you changed the WEG travel times from days to hours, we're looking at a much more reasonable gazetteer.

Agreed! I have always hated the WEG Hyperspace times. Ever since 1988 when I first bought the game!

HOWEVER! I use the speed of plot for hyperspace in my game. It is MUCH easier to do, and my players are cool with it as long as I can justify it, which is usually done by comparing to a scene in one of the films.

So here is my adjusted timetable, based on the feedback above:

Day 1: Battle of Scarif - Leia takes off with the DS1 plans. Vader chases and catches his daughter Leia. R2 and 3PO take escape pod to Tatooine, only to be captured by Jawas

Day 2: Untini! Jawas sell R2 and 3PO to Owen Lars. Luke cleans them up, sees the "you're my only hope" message. Dreams about joining the Empire (?) as he looks at a couple of suns setting. Queue tune.

Day 3: Luke wakes up to discover R2 has done a runner! Typical R2! 3PO and Luke head off to see if the old hermit Ben knows where R2 is. Meets Ben, heads back home, Jawas dead, Lars are dead, goes to Mos Eisley, meets Han, takes off to Alderaan in a piece of junk whose success is measured by distance traveled on a well known route. (x=12)

Day 4: Luke trains with saber on way to Alderann...whoops. No Alderaan, but wait!...that's no moon! Captured by DS`1, explores DS1, frees Leia, sees Obi killed, escapes DS1. Heads to Yavin4...a little too easily. Because it is "a day that will be long remembered", on that same day the Rebels get plans for DS1, prepares to take it on...that's no moon...again! DS1 arrives, Rebels attack, "use the force Luke", one in a million shot, BOOM goes the DS1. Vader escapes.

Day 5+: Wookiee too tall to get a medal

Those numbers are extremely broken. Certainly not usable for general measurements. It looks like they may not have used uniform hyperdrive classes for that. It takes 7 hours to get from Tatooine to Alderaan, but takes 22 days and 14 hours to get to Coruscant? That just doesn't line up. It would only take you 23 hours to just route through Alderaan.

The chart itself states that the times given are for direct planet to planet routes, and that it is entirely possible to shorten your travel times by taking alternate routes through other systems which have faster travel times.

The Death Star has a much slower hyperdrive so that gives time to go over planes have Luke do sim time to fly an X-Wing with Biggs vouching for him. Prep fighters for battle plan the attack

According to the Visual Dictionary for the Last Jedi, Crait and Cantonica are separated by a huge distance, yet the mission to Canto Bight was apparently completed in under 18 hours:

  • Crait is around 5 o'clock on the galactic clock and about 2/3rds of the way out from galactic center (note that the resistance fleet evacuated to this planet at sublight speeds, so they must have been really close for most of the movie).
  • Cantonica is around 1:30 on the 'galactic clock' and pretty much on the outermost galactic edge.

So, in under 18 hours, they managed to

  • traverse maybe 3/4ths of the galactic diameter,
  • have an evening of adventure (including being arrested, thrown in jail, breaking out, and stealing a new ship), and
  • Travel back to the fleet.

This seems to imply that a reasonably fast ship (I don't think any speeds have been given for the ships actually used for this mission), you can probably reach any point in the galaxy in 12 hours or less.

Can we please move hypersapce time of travel comments to this thread:

Please keep the discussion for A New Hope timeline, based on what happens in the movie.

See earlier comment about Vader mentioning killing Obi Wan and the Rebels in the same day.

That still has 25 hours to work with.

What this really implies is a lack of thought or care for these things by the film makers. Goes doubly for ROS.

Is it just me, or do quite a lot of the problems we've had in Star Wars canon over the years stem from small bits of flavour text in the various Visual Dictionaries?

To some degree yes. like Storm troopers and their thermal detonator. Which is more likely just a grenade.

Ya know, I don't think Vader meant that in a "During this 24 hour period, we will have killed the last Jedi and wiped out the rebellion" but more like FDR's day of infamy, where it was the specific act.

The visual dictionaries (VD) and maps account for a huge amount of fan whinging and raging.

You are, of course, entitled to your preference. I would note, however, that the new Disney canon is very new and does not include so much non-film material that large numbers of inconsistencies would yet have cropped up. Give them time. As more and more non-film material is introduced the inconsistencies will mount. This is inevitable when you license the rights to create new content and then stamp your seal on it, which is what Disney is doing. Disney couldn't make a trilogy of films that was internally consistent with itself, let alone the previous films in the franchise. The last installment was a giant desperate retcon. There is no way, given time, that the mass of books, comics, and games they are licensing won't become just as muddled as the previous "canon" or that other space franchise did. What is more, I find Disney's approach to non-film materials thus far kind of narrow and boring. Some of its quite good, but a lot of it is lackluster in inspiration and its less interested in building the universe than it is providing a second rail of marketing for films and television. So, my preference is just "studio canon" with everything else being "theory."

They could also get much, much better when they aren't beholden to the Skywalker Saga. Having fresh things rather than having to account for 40+ years of already existing weight can do a lot.

Marvel was able to do it pretty well when they did fresh takes on the comics, and largely did new stories and twists on them, so I think LFL may have some success when they start doing their own thing outside of the Saga.

We can hope! And don't get me wrong, I think Disney was right to "wipe the board" and start fresh. I just prefer not to slap the "canon" label on anything other than studio productions. For me, everything else is just "officially licensed" and "apocrypha."

I personally hate this idea. I've always like the idea that the galaxy is a big place and that kind of insta-travel goes against my head canon.

That applies to the OP when it comes to Tatooine > Alderaan and Alderaan (or rather, DS1) to Yavin. I am very ok with (per the chart from someone else) Alderaan only being 7h from Tatooine but hate the idea that you can get anywhere in 12 hours.
