Skill Ranks above 5

By Jawa4thewin, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Can you get skill ranks above 5? IE character has 5 skill ranks then has a piece of gear that gives them +1 skill rank.

Sorry if this was asked before and if it was if you can link me that post that would be great!

Hutt Crime Lords have 8 Resilience, so there is precedent for skill ranks above 5. I'm not sure if it is stated anywhere, but I believe that they can increase their skill ranks past 5 with gear.

Understood! That is a bad guy though so I am just wondering if there was a rule or ruling made for PCs

It seems the answer is yes. However, my experience is that characters with skill ranks of 4-5 are already starting to roll over all but the toughest opposition and, without extreme negative factors in play, can usually pass most non-combat challenges without much worry.

At least according to the RAW in the CRBs, no, you cannot raise a skill above five ranks. This is explicitly stated on page 37 of the F&D CRB, under Skill Training. The very first sentence states that, “Each skill has five ranks available.” So, no, you cannot raise a skill above five ranks.

Yes, five ranks available, but that doesn't address whether it can be raised above that through various bonuses.

You can have 5 ranks. Abilities can be up to 6 7 with cybernetics.

The mechanics kind of break beyond that per devs

Pg. 92 EoE for Tramps "Five ranks oftraining available"

However, pg. 173 mentions under cybernetics that the skill can only be increased 1 level above max (5 normal, 6 with implant).

Cybernetics can push Characteristics up to 7 and Skills up to 6.

As for gear, if I had a player saying that they really needed 8 ranks in X skill, I doubt I'd let them. 6 seems like a reasonable max.

Equally they're NPCs, so they don't follow the same rules as PCs.

I never had characters with more than 5 ranks in attribute and / or skills in games I've ran. With a 6th rank does it mean you get 6 dice green / yellow in your dice pool ?

With 6/6, yes, you would get 6 Proficiency.

It can as upgrades work like normal and can generate new dice for the pool. But that is technical not raising the skill above 5, but instead the dice pool.

I wonder if the system wouldn't work better if the caps were switched. Ie attribute cap of 5 and skills at 6. Considering the broad utility of attributes, I think the more specialized skills would fit better with a higher cap.

On the other hand, as difficulty tends to top out at 5 dice, I'm more partial to capping both attributes and skills at 5.

I actually cap abilities at no more than +1 during Character Creation (except droids). You can increase them further with the training talent, but naturally a Chandra fan for example can only get so strong. To make up for this I don't cap skills.

Do you mean they can only improve one ability by +1 during character creation or that they can only increase each ability at +1 during character creation?

Each ability +1.

Cool. That makes sense. My table tends to prefer broader characters who top out in the 4-5 rank range. Games tend to be more sustainable that way.
