Lightsaber Crafting and Armorer Questions

By daggertx, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Howdy,

  • If a player makes a precision custom hilt out of Endless Vigil and it has HP of 3. Does that mean he has to use crystal of HP 3 or less?
  • The Gearhead talent on the Armorer lets you remove black dice, but when would a character who is crafting in his workshop have to worry about black dice?

Sorry I am new to the FFG Star Wars system and its a bit confusing. Thank you

All crystals use 2 hard points.

A person would have set back back dice when the situation is sub optimal.

I noticed in Gadget and Gear a couple of crystals that had HP 3 or 4.

@daggertx is correct on this. While most lightsaber crystals do take 2 Hard Points, there are multiple crystals in various sourcebooks which take up only one, or as many as three or four hard points in a lightsaber. The Etaan Crystal and Ghostfire Crystal from Endless Vigil only take one HP each. Likewise, the Sorian Crystal from Keeping the Peace , requires four HP.

Yeah pretty much. The HP is just a representation of how much additional stuff a hilt can support. So that can be a big honking HP3 crystal, or a tiny HP1 crystal and some other hilt attachments.

Probably pretty rarely. Unless the workshop lost power, or was under attack, or what have you, you wouldn't have much reason to have setbacks (also those probably aren't the time to do a big 12 hour crafting project anyway as you probably have more pressing issues to deal with.) That Talent applies to ALL Mechanics checks the character makes though, not just crafting. So it would apply to repairing an item (crafted, bought, or salvaged), or getting a speeder running, or any number of other things, and that's where you're more likely to find Setbacks.

Gearhead removes setbacks from Mechanics checks. Not every Mechanics check is a crafting check. But a character in a workshop can still get setbacks from being tired, injured, under pressure of time, sabotaged...

Also, you don't always have access to a workshop... most episodes of The A-Team included a scene wherein there is something like an attempt to craft a tank from a pickup truck, some chickenwire, a moonshine still, and a couple of barrels.

MacGyver had multiple ranks of Gearhead, methinks.

And Improved Gearhead + Supreme Gearhead made just for him.
