Odd request, collection size

By Ahrimon, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm planning on making a mandalorian themed box for my GM to store his books in as a birthday present. My problem is I only have the core books and a few others, so I'm not sure how much room all of his books will need. He has all of the books from the three lines, plus the era and resource books, but not the adventures or starter boxes.

If any kind soul would be willing to tell me how about how tall that stack of books is I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you!

Since there are only 3 sizes of books, some simple math ought to do it for you. Just take the thickness of the 29$ splats, the 39$ splats, and the CRBs and multiply.

I assume you know what you are doing, but I feel I can't not warn you that a box isn't necessarily the most accessible way to store books. You'd need adequate spacing to allow him to pick them up easily, and it would need to be compared to what he already has. Bookshelves are pretty much the be-all and end-all of book storage in that regard. Part of that is that the bindings of all of the books are visible simultaneously, allowing you to get what you need easily.

Oh, does he have the books like Strongholds of Resistance or Suns of Fortune?

From my calculations, 20 inches is about right. If he doesn't have Suns of Fortune, Lords of Nal Hutta, Strongholds of Resistance, and Nexus of Power, that number drops to 18 inches.

(9x~.7 for the 39$+18x~.5 for the 29$, and 3x~1.5 for the CRBs=~20)

Funny, I'm in cleanup mode and just put them on a shelf, easy to measure: all the books (minus beginner boxes) add up to about 22" wide. Remove the adventures and it's 16".

If i were you i would make the box sized to fit all the books plus a couple but include a couple fillers to bring it to what he has. I can measure the full staxk later i have the complete collection

I really appreciate it! I'm going for a box with some handles on the side and the books laying on their front edges with spines up. It will fit on a small collapsible dolly for easy transport. I do plan to have some extra room around the books for extra space and a tray on top for dice, pencils, notes, etc.

Just FYI, that's harder on the binding, as gravity will be pulling the pages down and away from the spine/binding.

Hmm. It'd be harder to tell which book is which in the box though. I'll have to give it some thought. Thank you for the heads up.

Just orient the box with the opening facing "out," a la a bookcase. Book binding is designed for books to be stored/displayed sitting on the bottom edge. When displayed side edge down so the spine is "up," there's more stress on the binding.

You could even put folding legs under it

I appreciate the ideas. But I'm just getting started on woodworking. I don't want to bite off too much for one of my first projects. :)

Just do it in stages.
