Odd(ball) Jobs

By NeonWolf, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Since they dropped "Oddball" across the board I'm incentivized to try him some more. Starting off with a Torrent list since it seems like the easiest way to trigger his ability. Planning on testing this list next week to see how it works. Went with Homing Missiles and Synced Consoles figuring that 1 guaranteed damage is better than a 2-die attack in most cases. Would be curious too see other ideas on lists with "Oddball" in them in any of the three chassis he can use.

I had thought of using him with Squad Leader, as it's an easy way to tigger his ability and coordinate at I5 is pretty useful. It's expensive though.

Something like this, maybe:

"Odd Ball" (Y-Wing) (44)
Squad Leader (12)
Plasma Torpedoes (9)
R4 Astromech (2)
Synchronized Console (1)

Red Squadron Bomber (30)
Proton Torpedoes (13)

Probably not competitive, but it's got potential for quite an alpha strike. The Y-Wings all focus, then Odd Ball coordinates a lock on one while also getting a lock themself. If Odd Ball and the first Y-Wing both pass their lock to the other Y-wings, you have an unmodded plasma torp, then a focus-modded proton torp, followed by two double-modded proton torps into the same target.

There's also lots of space to swap bits around if you want. You can replace a Y-Wing with Ahsoka with CLT to give Odd Ball a focus for his torp; or if you go Torrent Odd Ball (with Mag Pulse missiles maybe?) you can swap one Y-Wing for two Gold Squaddies and Dorsal on the other Y-Wings; or you can have two ARC-170s and ARC Odd Ball with a similar setup, and still have 15 points left for upgrades.

The best use I have gotten out of Odd Ball is pairing him with Swoop in either the ARC or the torrent.

In the torrent you give him the sync console and use him and Swoop like any other torrents. It does not seem to work well putting stuff on the torrents. This was okay but I went back to just the GST torrents. That is not going to be any good in Hyperspace.

Odd Ball in the ARC worked pretty good with C-3P0 and R4-P44 but C-3P0 did not usually pull his weight. Used that with Snips, Broadside, and Swoop and it was okay. With the drop on Sync Console, Snips, and ARC Odd Ball I might come back to some of the ideas around that.

I like the torpedo team Ysenhal has going. Though I think I would go with fewer torpedoes. I like the Squad lead idea.

Interesting, have you had a chance to put this on the table yet?

Kinda goofing around on this one but could be the start of something. Broadside for flanking/ion then Anakin and Oddball for some high-I torpedoes

Oddball with mostly just Mag-Pulse Warheads seems tempting to me. Init 5 will often be early enough to disrupt someone, and on someone as cheap as Oddball, that just seems handy.

40 points, 41 with SynCon. Fill with some combination of Obi, Mace, Plo, and/or Ric Olie. I should note: not some elaborate SynCon strategy. Mostly, I think it's a totally fair upgrade on it's own. Jedi often like to take Lock actions, maybe it can be passed to someone else if not needed, and that can be decent action economy. For only 1 point? I'd throw it on as many things as can take it.

Two examples:

Three-ship with 7B:

  • Oddball (Mag-Pulse Warheads, Synchronized Console) 41
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi (Sense, 7B, R2 Astromech, SynCon) 82
  • Mace Windu (Heightened Perception, 7B, R2, SynCon) 76
    • Total 199, bid 1

Four-ship with CLT:

  • Oddball (Mag-Pulse Warheads) 4
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi (Sense, CLT, R2-A6) 63
  • Plo Koon (CLT) 48
  • Ric Olie (R2 Astromech) 49
    • Total 200, bid 0

Nope! I don't actually own that many Y-Wings, haha. I might try it with some ARCs later, but I have a bunch of other stuff I want to mess around with what with the points change.

Ok, finally in on actually trying this guy.

My Republic list has been Obi, Plo, Broadside and Matchstick. It's been very good.... but it's lost 3pt on the relatively important bid and Matchstick lost a lot of his toys in HS. So now he's just out!

His role is very alpha. The other 3 need something to push damage through early and then stick around at least a tiny bit. I haven't felt particularly inspired by any replacements... until now!

(48) Obi-Wan Kenobi [Delta-7 Aethersprite]
(4) Calibrated Laser Targeting
Points: 52

(44) Plo Koon [Delta-7 Aethersprite]
(4) Calibrated Laser Targeting
Points: 48

(44) "Oddball" [BTL-B Y-wing]
(2) R4 Astromech
(6) Adv. Proton Torpedoes
Points: 52

(36) "Broadside" [BTL-B Y-wing]
(2) R4 Astromech
(5) Ion Cannon Turret
Points: 43

Total points: 195

Swarms were a bit of a sticking point before, I think they'll be even more so now, but hey.

Also, the Dorsal on Matchstick was useful coverage vs aces. At least I have 3 I5s myself now and they still really don't like Broadside.

Anyway, the main thing with Oddball here is that he is incredibly simple, therefore relatively cheap. Seems a good place to start, he can get some good support. Plo is gonna become his best buddy.

Previously, Obi stalked Matchstick to feed his double tap focus. Plo lurked Broadside's way but his help is rarely needed there. Mostly he became a free wheel. That'll be Obi now. In his true 'hello there' role.

So it seems almost a straight swap. The initial APT can be routinely double modded with I5 and Plo. The neat bit is the reload>lock, (disarm yoink), fire torp trick that normally belongs to IA Anakin.

Red reload seems to add a lot more opportunity to pick up the locks. With a high init roll as well, the ability can be put to work moving 1st or 2nd.

The extra bid may help a lot here. Ion is handy :D

He is going to have to be a little more circumspect to achieve full value than Matchstick, which will push Broadside into more dangerous positions. It could be a fair trade, repeat APTs are alarming, but the 2nd wave Ion assault sets the Jedi up to finish. Might be that things need rethinking a bit.

But mainly, I5 with repeatable 5 dice, baby, the rest is gravy! Ion gravy!

Edit. Oh, and everybody is now free to target lock unfriendlies. That could be a thing.

I like this. Think I'm gonna have to put it on the table soon.

Building on that list, why not four I5 pilots?
