Rumor has it...

So I'm bored again so I though I'd start another topic where people can share tales of adventure. This time I'm interested in Rumors and any interesting experiences people have had with them.

Most of the time I can pass rumors if they come up. I believe I've seen The Great Ritual the most but failing that one is esentually "well no point in playing anymore" and its usually not hard to pass.

By far the worst experience I've had with a rumor was getting Kingsport Horror Cover up rumor on turn 1-4 ish in a 5 player game (we only ditch a rumor if it comes up turn 0). It was impossible for us to pass it. That is the one where you need monster trophies to pass it. If you get this late game its amazing since the reward is stagering and late game you usually have a gladiator who can pass it mostly alone. Unfortuantly if you can't pass it the turn it comes out you probably will never pass it. That is what happened to us. Monster trophies cannot be obtained at a rate fast enough to keep up with the number of clue tokens added.

To make matters worse I was Rex and the fail condition is more or less every clue token everywhere goes bye bye. We knew we were going to fail but loseing all clue tokens that early was going to be brutal. We tried our best to stall it by paying partial cost while those with clues jumped into gates early (normally we like to take a spare clue or 2 with us but we jumped with just 5. As for me (Rex) usually I'd wait to lose the curse before jumping, not this time since the trophies were used to stall). I don't believe we got any seals before failing the rumor. I tried with Rex but naturally I rolled only 5s and no 6s of the check to close the gate. The rest of the game went how you'd expect with esentually no starting clues.

Playing alone with one investigator, Kate Winthrop, and the AO being Hastur...Rumor "The Terrible Experiment" comes up, and of course every monster that I draw is super-strong, has Nightmarish or Overwhelming, and Kate ends up in the hospital or the asylum. She fails the rumor and voila, monsters enter play, Terror rises to 10, the Ancient One awakens for breaching the monster limit and has a -10 combat modifier. Kate watches helpless as she doesn't have even a single clue token nor the sanity to cast Azathoth's Curse and is consumed by turn 3 o 4 :)

Soo, what I learned is that the next time I play alone, I'll go with at least two investigators. Not much you can do with one if these kind of situations arise.
