This is the worse possible news for the game :(

It's not ideal, but it is a method of providing physical dice to be rolled for those new players who prefer physical dice as opposed to the variety of online dice rollers to be found.

It's more specialized equipment than most people have (although that number is shrinking fast) and you need a cad model to work from - but would 3D printing dice work? You need to get the balance right of course, so that might be an issue, plus the cost might be prohibitively high per die - so not a perfect solution, but it might get a fellow by.

It would really depend on the printer. I wouldn’t trust mine to make dice, although there are 3D print models out there.

Group think is pretty common here too.

No it's not...

These guys already made some dice I've bought via kickstarter (and use regularly in my games):

Clearly somebody knows what they are doing. I seriously think there'd be a market for "emoji-dice" or whatever symbols you want.

You seem to have misunderstood. So let me clarify.

I'm not talking about 3D printing dice. I'm talking about printing out sticker sheets (which doesn't take specialized equipment, just a printer and specific type of paper) using the fan-made symbols, and then putting those stickers onto existing dice. Much as folks did back during the EotE Beta before the dice were available for sale, as one can either purchase blank dice of the appropriate type or taking an existing set of numbered dice and putting the stickers on over those.

I'm so annoyed that I didn't notice the kickstarter they did for the traps dice. I would have backed that if I knew about it. I use those weather and mood dice ALL the time.

I understood. I was just offering printing as another suggestion to the group, to discuss the viability of going the printer route.

See, here I'm totally shooting in the dark. I'm only aware of printers at a high level, so the finer details like how flexable and nuanced they can get is beyond me (although I know they're printing some crazy stuff these days).

If you’re making and printing the stickers at home...do the symbols really need to be altered?

Only in that sharing PDFs of the sticker sheets with the symbols as-is is a TM violation.

they can really betrademarked. someone already covered it.

Q-worshop can make custom dice. It seems the best company I could find. But, I've no idea what the price could be per die. Cheaper (of course) if you buy more. It seems to be cheaper (per their website) if you use basic symbols they don't have to create. So:

Success/Failure: Star and X

Advantage/Threat: V or A and Omega or T

Triumph/Despair: Circled Star and Circled X.

Just order a bunch of FFG dice why they are still around. But yes there are custom dice companies out there too, my friend from college publishes a simple game called Five Ancient Kingdoms which ships with custom dice he had made for it.

People share PDFs of homebrew adventures and sourcebooks with the symbols in them without issue.

We were discussing what to do when the dice run out. I've got plenty. This was about dice for potential future fans who would like to enjoy these games someday.

Compared to some companies, FFG has been very permissive of that sort of thing. There's more than a few RPG companies that would have been issuing cease & desists to OggDude, especially for having the temerity (in their view) of announcing said program right on the company forums.

If Asmodee is indeed prepping itself for sale, there's no telling what stance the new owners will take with regards to FFG's proprietary dice. After all, there's been a number of YouTubers who used "copyright free" music in various videos that had to then take those videos down (or have their accounts suspended) once a new company purchased the rights to that music and decided to enforce a copyright claim.

In many cases when dealing with a large company, it's less an issue of "does the company really have a leg to stand on?" and more that they rely on the sheer intimidation factor of most people not having the resources to fight a lengthy court battle no matter how much in the right that individual is.

Something just occurred to me. If there was only RPG functionality in the dice app, I could see it folding with the range. But with X-Wing and Armada functionality and those two lines going strong, why would the pull the app? The RPG might be dead, but the app has to be a mistake.

Back up your APKs anyway.

Because we will hear next month that X-Wing is canceled as well. 😉

GW is the new owner of the Star Wars licence and we are all doomed. 🤣

on the plus side we will have a new version of the star wars RPG every year. But we will get the Jedi book every 4 years...

I actually contacted Q-Workshop last month when the layoffs happened to inquire about the price of printing custom, non- FFG Trademarked symbol dice. Note that this is for Genesys, so no Force die:

300 identical sets including 2 different D6, two different D8 and two different D12
price per set - 7.64 USD (2,292 USD total)
500 identical sets including 2 different D6, two different D8 and two different D12
price per set - 5.94 USD (2,970 USD total)
They currently are not taking orders for less than 300 dice (and note that's 300 of each) so I don't have any numbers for less than 300.
So yeah, printing dice is expensive.

expensive and yet not that terrible...

Not terrible, but a set of 2 of each die would have to cost around US$20 to account for shipping and packaging. Unless it was just packaged in a Ziploc bag, in which case it could be sold for US$15. Are there 200 people willing to buy a set of GeneriSys dice?

200 is the minimum number of 2-packs needed to sell at US$15 to cover the price of printing 500 units of each.

For reference, you can find my symbols on GitHub and a 27min video as I make a fool out of myself learning Affinity Designer going over my thought patterns and reasoning.

I was actually surprised the price wasn't more expensive. When there are no other options, I can see people buying these if they wish to get into the game. The gamble is if you don't get enough of said people and you are left with buckets of dice at around $1 each for the 500 model,

Ffor a profit, $20? for a set with like number of dice that Genesys has provided?. Compare that to around $15 being a typical price from FFG.

FFG gets a better bulk discount. they probably buy in lots of 10,000 or something

Most of the dice have already run out in/around my area.
As said earlier: I had to buy them from across the continent.

And beginner games are also running out. The only ones I can still see in stock at places is The Force Awakens.
It has a good map though, but I already have the pack.
