Sorry for such a basic question. Haven’t played in years. At range one, is it only a basic attack that gets plus one die. Like if I have a turret that is range one 2 attack dice and it says ‘Attack’ I don’t get the extra die do I?
Range 1 extra attack die
It depends on the weapon. If it has the Ordnance Icon on the weapon, then range bonuses do no apply.
Yes, the munitions with the ordnance icon (Proton Torps for example) on the card do not get range bonuses. Its a big change from 1.0

So turrets and cannons do get a range 1 bonus. Also defenders get one too if at range 3.
I was playing a 1.0 game on Saturday. A refresher to gauge if truly want to buy in 2.0 after so many years and this was the only question I had.
i see from the first response the new rules probably clear that up. That coincides with I heard 2.0 cleaned up a lot of stuff.

I would say, dont play 1E to see if you want to play 2E. 2nd Edition is quite a different game from 1st. Much more balanced and mechanically cleaner (tho not squeekly clean of course). Its a much better game now that it was in 1E, so playing 1E isnt really a fair judgment for how 2E plays.

I was going to answer the original question by asking if you're still in 1e since you "haven't played in years" so this follow up is helpful. In 1e no secondary weapons of any kind got a range bonus and in 2e there is no longer a turret with a range of only 1 (goodbye autoblaster turret)
As mentioned by other responders (thanks for the direct quote/pic @Lyianx ) though, in 2e all weapons get range bonus unless there is that particular icon to indicate it does not.
I'll also second Lyianx's sentiment that 2e is overall better streamlined and balanced than 1e. I'll add the caveat though that they countered streamlining with more rules and additional effects. (hello, Strain tokens and Force charges!) So that's kind of a wash in my opinion, but at least you can find all of those effects in the primary rules document online instead of needing to purchase a ship you don't want just to get the little extra rules booklet to find out what that new action/token does. Points balance is being dynamically adjusted on a 6 month basis which keeps the competitive scene fresh so that's a big plus.
With that in mind the only things that truly carry over from 1e are the core movement mechanics (secret dial, reveal it, move with a template, then attack/defend with those custom D8s) and use of the same physical materials (bases, dice, templates, ruler, models).

@Ywingscum see if you can get a couple games of play with 2e stuff to see if it gives you component overload or if the streamlining keeps that in check for you. It's a big game to just jump in to and it's tough to retrain the mindset on all the small but significant rule changes from 1e. (We often call it 1.0 hangover on the rules forum)
