What happened to Midnight?

By Ronu, in X-Wing

Would be interesting to see Comm Relay come back, in some fashion. Not necessarily exactly as the first edition upgrade, but maybe something along the lines of Networked Calculations.

I rather like Muse as a standalone piece, anyway. give her Pattern Analyser and Fanatical (about the same price) and she's a surprisingly good as a 'pocket TIE defender' who can do back-to-back segnor's loops that can make her irritatingly hard to pin down if you don't have a turret.

Have I ever mentioned how brilliant you are? That sounds utterly hilarious and I need to give it a try some time.

As for the question: it's all about the action economy. If the First Order had a reasonably costed small or medium base support unit which could provide coordinate support/other economy, Midnight could really shine. As it stands, you are reliant on Midnight not taking too much fire (as even three agility ships will melt if they've got no mods) and rolling well when attacking (on the first pass you won't be able to use the lock for rerolls unless you sacrifice the ability, in which case you may as well have brought Malarus).

Or some way to generate target locks for allies easily. The inability to focus/lock from one action is also one of two problems with Static, as well (the other being a lack of any reliable way to get a bonus attack dice). 1st edition Omega Ace was awesome with Advanced Optics and Opportunist because she was self-contained.

Annoyingly LeHuse seems to recognise this problem but deals with it by stealing someone else's lock - which might make him okay but doesn't help Midnight or Static - when what the faction really wants is the reverse effect.

Muse is my favorite TIE/fo pilot currently. I use him as an enabler for Pattern Analyzer Tavson or turning Kylo into a Defender. The Pattern Analyzer version of Muse is something I want to try, but it costs a bit more than I want to pay. Perhaps after the upcoming points change on the 9th, I'll be more apt to take it.

I use squad leader muse as a coordinate bot. Its the only cheap support option i know of in the faction, both for extra actions on the power hitters and removing stress.

But back to Midnight, OL was my fav pilot in 1st ed, and Im not sure the increase in init was worth the point cost that went with it. Its a lot like tie x1s, who want TLs, but take unmodded green dice as a result (though they get Jendon, so thats almost moot). Maybe a unique tech upgrade that gives you the ewing TL ability beyond range 3, but cant tl at range 1 would be useful.

It's kind of annoying that Targeting Synchroniser was reworded (probably deliberately!) to do nothing but enable ordnance to work without locks. Even if it did something like the republic console upgrade and let you pass them over it could be nice.

I don't necessarily mind, in the sense that easily enabling ordnance is kind of a pain.

However:

  1. Jendon exists.
  2. Neither First Order nor Resistance have great cheap ordnance carriers. Missile SFs are decent, but it's only missiles and not torps.
  3. Passive Sensors exist.

The initial fear of Targeting Synchronizer wasn't inappropriate. However... just seems like there are scarier tools for mass ordnance.

This. If you're arming a TIE/sf with missiles you might as well shell the extra handful of points for passive sensors to make them self-contained, and the first order's only torpedo carrier is the TIE/vn which is eye-wateringly expensive to use in any role that requires a second ship.

Almost all the tie FO named pilots are overcosted by a considerable amount; hopefully the update in just a few days changes that.

For example, compare Malarus to Tallie and it just blows your mind. They have mostly gimmicky abilities that are hard to use effectively but pay crazy amounts for.

Maybe a charge based upgrade. 2 non-recurring charges. During the end phase, you may choose 1 green token and spend 1 charge. Do not remove that token.
