New Stats from Genesys

By bsmith23, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So the new EPG from Genesys apparently has Power Level stas for npcs. Has anyone out there do e these for SW NPCs yet, and if not, does anyone know the formulas on how to figure them? Haven't been able to pick up the book yet.

The formula is pretty easy, I was able to crack it in a few hours of fiddling.

There are 3 Power Levels: Combat, Social and General. You use the PLs to create an appropriate challenge, based on the number of players and how much earned XP they have. There's a big table in the book (that I won't replicate here) that gives you an approximate Challenge Rating for the encounter.

Characteristics provide between -1 and +2 to a specific PL number: Brawn and Agility are for Combat, Willpower and Presence are for Social, and Intellect and Cunning are for General. Add the two together and consult the following:

3 or less: -1
4 or 5: +0
6 or 7: +1
8+: +2

Next up is skills. In Genesys, you have General Skills, Social Skills, Combat Skills and Knowledge Skills (slightly different than the SWRPG differentiation). Add up all the ranks in a specific group and divide by 3, rounding down, to get the modifier for that group. General + Knowledge for General PL, Combat Skills for Combat PL and Social Skills for Social PL. If you have multiple skills at the same rank, for example a pilot with both Pilot (Planetary) 3 and Pilot (Space) 3, the second (and subsequent) skill only adds 1. So the prior two pilot skills at 3 would be a total of 4, not 6, before dividing.

Talents and abilities have their own modifiers, with three tables dedicated to them in the EPG, so you'll have to get your hands on a copy to see what constitutes a positive bonus to what PL. And there are a few guidelines for PL adjustment due to gear, for example:

  • Weapons that deal 15+ base damage, armor with +3 soak or defense 4: +2 to combat power level
  • Gear that adds [success] or [boost] to social or general skill checks: +1 to social or general power level

Things like that.

How do WT and ST feature into this system?

I would think a combat challenge level ought to be based mainly off (1) dice pool with main weapon (2) WT and ST (3) main weapon damage (4) Adversary level (5) any other tough talents/powers

  • Minions: A minion with a Brawn of 1 should have a wound threshold of 3. Otherwise, a minion should have a wound threshold of 5.
  • Rivals: Rivals should have a wound threshold of 8 plus their Brawn rating.
  • Nemeses: A nemesis should have a wound thresh- old of 12 plus their Brawn rating, and a strain threshold of 10 plus their Willpower rating.

Then there are 5 options for +WT that range from +1 Soak & +2 WT that add +0 Combat PL to +25 WT that adds +2 Combat PL. ST has two options: +5 ST for no increase and +10 ST for a +1 Social PL.

That's pretty much how it works, yes. Except that (1) above is based on characteristics and skill ranks, (2) is mentioned above, (3) has it's own section, (4) and (5) have about a page and a half each.

So in essence, yes. But the way those numbers are calculated is a bit more in-depth.
