What's Your Wing?

By Helias de Nappo, in X-Wing Squad Lists

You have 200 points to spend, as usual, but your entire list must be built as a single wing. All Extended pilots are allowed. What's your list?

EDIT: To be clear, your opponent would face the same restrictions; it would be wing vs. wing.

I've been fiddling around trying to build a Vader wing and have only come up with this:

Darth Vader (67)
Hate (3)
Fire-Control System (2)
Afterburners (6)
Agent of the Empire (4)

Ship total: 82 Half Points: 41 Threshold: 3

Academy Pilot (23)
Ship total: 23 Half Points: 12 Threshold: 2

Academy Pilot (23)
Ship total: 23 Half Points: 12 Threshold: 2

Academy Pilot (23)
Ship total: 23 Half Points: 12 Threshold: 2

Academy Pilot (23)
Ship total: 23 Half Points: 12 Threshold: 2

Academy Pilot (23)
Ship total: 23 Half Points: 12 Threshold: 2

Total: 197

Not exactly inspired, but I don't really see any better options for the Dark Lord than the max amount of damage soaking and max number of blockers. With Vader at 82 pts there doesn't seem to be room for Howlrunner plus enough other TIEs to make use of her ability. A bodyguard of elite TIEs doesn't seem to be as good at protecting Vader as running a full-sized wing of mooks. The wingmen would split from the wing when needing to move at I1 for blocking and then rejoin, as able, in order to benefit from Vader's barrel rolls and afterburners.

Can you clarify what you mean by single wing?

I guess by wing he means a formation of ships flying together. If so... Generic Howlrunner Swarm... Cannot go wrong with that.

You are looking at ships, that have similar, if not the same maneuvers, or you will have troubles maintaining a formation.

I guess Vader with Brother and Sister as an Inquisition Wing? But mostly for the fluff... They want to dodge the arcs, not fly together as one blob.

I belive he means a wing by the definition in Epic Battles expansion, that is all ships must be of the same type (except specific fo and empire cases).

Anyway I had great results with this 200pt wing in one of the scenarios

Wedge Antilles (55)
Crack Shot (1)
Servomotor S-Foils (0)
Veteran Wing Leader (2)

Ship total: 58 Half Points: 29 Threshold: 3

Garven Dreis (X-Wing) (47)
Crack Shot (1)
Servomotor S-Foils (0)

Ship total: 48 Half Points: 24 Threshold: 3

Biggs Darklighter (48)
Servomotor S-Foils (0)

Ship total: 48 Half Points: 24 Threshold: 3

Red Squadron Veteran (43)
Selfless (3)
Servomotor S-Foils (0)

Ship total: 46 Half Points: 23 Threshold: 3

Total: 200

With a lot of damage distribution and a 12 red dice is a jousting monster.

Ah, thanks. Haven’t dabbled into Epic yet so wasn’t sure. Doesn’t sound too totally different than what I come across in one or two rounds of a tournament.

Yes, I meant a wing as defined in the epic rules.

There are restrictions for building a wing (usually all of the ships in the wing have to be of the same type, except that Empire and First Order wing leaders can choose to have an escort of TIE/ln, TIE/fo, or TIE/sf wingmen instead), but there are benefits as well, mostly related to action economy, ease of maintaining formation, and damage distribution (wings also simplify and speed things up a lot when there are many ships on the table). I like Epic and huge ships, but I like the wing rules so much that I'm thinking of using them in smaller games - wing vs. wing - and also Epic games with no huge ships, where all or most of the ships are organized into wings.

  • Soontir Fel
    • Veteran Wing Leader
    • Daredevil
    • Afterburners
    • Stealth Device
  • Saber Squadron Ace x 3
    • Crack Shot

The rubbish an I6 wing leader can pull on demand is ridiculous, since Daredevil lets you pivot the entire formation without stressing the wingmen.
