Energy Barrier timing question

By DatonKallandor, in Marvel Champions: The Card Game

If you have 2 Energy Barriers in play, can you use both interrupts on a single attack? (I am thinking yes, because it's the same timing window and two different instances of card ability)

If yes to the above, how would you resolve the following: Villain at 1 hp and there's another villain stage left. Villain attacks, does 2 or more damage, Player triggers both energy barriers.

Does only the first instance of damage trigger, bring the villain to 0 HP and reveal the next stage, end of interaction

or

Does the first damage bring the villain to 0 HP, reveal the next stage, deal the 2nd damage to the next stage. And when would the villains new stage's "When Revealed" triggers fire? Between the first and second damage application? After the 2nd damage?

Excess damage that is dealt to defeat a villain stage
does not carry over to the new stage.

That’s not the question. The question is the timing of each damage.

I could see it working either way, I’ll take a look at it when I’m home later.

It's two different sources of 1 damage each though - hence the question.

Energy Barrier's text is "Interrupt: When you would take any amount of damage, remove 1 reflection counter from here -> Prevent 1 of that damage and deal 1 damage to an enemy." Two things to note here. First is, as an interrupt, the ability will resolve before it's triggering condition resolves (taking any amount of damage), and second that it cannot respond to the same triggering condition twice.

So the sequence looks like this:

1. Villain attacks you for 2 damage, while at 1 health of first stage. You are about to receive 2 damage.

2. You interrupt with energy barrier #1, prevent 1 damage and deal 1 damage to an enemy.

3. Note that the attack's damage will have 1 prevented, and then deal 1 damage to any enemy. In this case, the villain.

4. Villain immediately transitions to Stage 2, resolving any When Revealed effects if necessary.

5. You are still about to receive 1 damage. You can't use Energy Barrier #1 to this incident again, but you activate Barrier #2, preventing 1 damage and dealing 1 damage.

6. Reduce incoming damage by 2 now, and deal 1 more damage. At this point, Villain is already on Stage 2, and can be dealt an additional damage.

This works because Villain transitions are effectively immediate. Energy Barrier is a triggered ability, and you are using two separate abilities on Barrier. There is ample time to transition the villain between each packet of damage, so the new stage will be ready to take damage.

Nice breakdown!

Next fun question:

You're gering attacked by the villain for 6 damage. You and the Villain each have 1 HP. You use Energy Barrier to Interrupt, ultimately knocking out the villain. Do you still take the rest of the damage, ending things in a draw?

I think technically you win the game instantly and do not complete the attack.

I think so too, because Energy Barrier is an Interrupt rather than a Response, so it happens before the trigger.

Yes, since the ability is an interrupt, the interrupt ability resolves before the triggering incident. 1 damage is dealt from the ability, and you don't have to wait for damage to actually be dealt for that damage to be applied. It just has to be 'impending.'
