Hero Abilities/rules question

By jrheel123, in Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Rules question, can’t find it in the rules anywhere. On your main hero’s card, can you use the ability on it and attack/thwart/recover? I’ve been playing it’s one or the other as either one would cause you to exhaust, but I don’t want to cheat myself lol. Two specific examples-

1. Can Peter Parker recover and use his ability to generate one resource? Or I have to pick one?

2. Can captain marvel attack or thwart and use her rechannel action, or she has to pick one?

As stated above I’ve been playing it as everything on the card makes you exhaust, unless it’s something like black Panther’s deal one damage back after being attacked

Anyone?

It's an inherited ability and be used whether you active or exhausted.

You only exhaust when it specifically says to do so. So every current hero except Ms Marvel can use their ability and make a basic attack/thwart.

Only using your basic characteristics exhausts a card unless the specific effect lists exhausting in the text. Allies have to exhaust to attack, Thwart or Defend as well.

As was said, you can use any Action (and Action subversions, like Hero Action ) as well as any text on a card and it doesn't matter if the card is exhausted or ready. The only time this matters is if the cost of an ability includes exhausting the card.

I had the same thought when we first played as I'm used to "exhausted" cards essentially being useless until they're readied... but in this game exhausted simply means you can't exhaust again to trigger any such actions. Other abilities are still available.

As another example, Iron Man can exhaust to attack or thwart, switch over to Tony Stark and then use his card draw ability.

Also, using an ability on one side does not prevent you from using an ability on an opposite side. For instance, Carol Danvers can activate Commander to draw a card, then flip to Captain Marvel and pay an Energy to heal 1 and draw a card with Rechannel. Similarly, Kamala Khan can use Teen Spirit to get a Ms Marvel card, then flip to Ms Marvel, play an Attack event, exhaust to trigger her Morphogenics ability to put that event back in her hand, and then even replay that same attack event.

Exhaust is basically just a cost on some abilities that explicitly say to exhaust.

I'd actually recommend getting a marker of some kind to put on your hero card when you've used that sides once-per-round ability. It's especially useful in multiplayer games where it can sometimes take a long time for a full round when it can be hard to remember if you've done your alter-ego/hero ability yet. Especially since many of them can be done on other people's turns because they're Actions.

That's a good idea. I went to amazon and ordered a set of Marvel challenge coins just for that purpose.

I have been using the first player turn marker for this during solo play. Should come up with something for multiplayer.

Ok thanks for replies. Feels weird to me, but it’s nice, since I’ve been hamstringing myself by only doing one thing on one side per turn

I tend to just put the green ‘generic’ token over the ability text if I’ve done it.
