It's probably akin to the holocrons, in that they're a technology so advanced that it might as well be magic, i.e. Clarke's Third Law.

So they may be partially sentient like a Holocron... that is interesting....

Dunno about sentience, given what we see on screen with the wayfinder. Probably more of tapping into the Force to point the use to a given destination. The wayfinders are apparently per-programed for a specific destination (Exegol) and possibly adapt the trajectory based upon where the user is in the galaxy. Rey and Kylo were each able to use it from different starting points in the galaxy (Ahch-To and Mustafar respectively), and given Rey's usage function as the equivalent of a navicomputer*, just limited to a single predeterimed destination.
With the compass, I don't think we really know enough given it's only been expounded upon in the visual guides. Sure, it helped Luke find Ahch-To, but there's not enough info to say if that particular compass just goes to one destination, or if the compass is able to take the user to other locations that were important to the ancient Jedi.
Edited by Donovan MorningfireX-wings have hyperdrives. What they don't have is astrogation computers without an astromech droid. The wayfinder is basically an Astrogation chart for Exigol it calculates the hyperspace trip to that single destination.
Keep in mind Jedi don't really need an astrogation computer at all if they know where they are going.
