Expert Shield Stack?

Probably a silly question that has been answered bef, but anything stopping me from using two redirect tokens when defending against an attack, one for the EST effect and one for the normal redirect effect? Since they are different effects.

I.e. incoming damage of 3. I have 2 redirects available, use 1 for EST effect reducing the damage to 2, another redirect for normal effect to shift the 2 damage to an adjacent hull zone.

... The rule that states that you can only spend one of each type of defense token during an attack?

It doesn’t mention fir what effect. It just stops you spending redundant. Full stop. 🙂

Here is the exact rule for refference, page 4 of the RRG:
"The defender cannot spend more than one defense token of each type per attack."

If I'm not mistaken the only way that you can do both is with commander Agate's effect. As her abbility mentions that "you cannot resolve the effect of each type of defense token more than once per attack", so you can spend a redirect for the effect of Expert Shields and then discard a redirect for the normal effect.

Biggs has got it see below

To make the Agate trick even more complicated:

Agate is a discard to get an effect, not a spend. So it should work with Expert Shield Tech in the first bit, namely that you can't SPEND a token twice.

Expert Shield Tech gives you a different effect so when you spend a redirect to get the EST effect, it replaces the redirect effect, but it is NOT the redirect effect. "instead of resolving that token's effect" is the key phrase for this. Also it only works on the "spend" so you can't Agate the token for the EST effect.

So the only way to double up is the following actions:

- Spend a redirect token for the EST effect.
- Discard the redirect token for the Agate effect.

It could theoretically be done with a single redirect token if you do it in that order.

Admonition is precedent for this, allowing you to spend a token for the standard effect, then discarding it with Admonition for the Admonition effect.

Huh. That is interesting, I don't like the idea of what this could allow in the future, but I follow the logic.

Its something I plan to investigate further.
