Recommendations for a New Player

By Cav Scout, in X-Wing

My son expressed some interest in playing X-Wing so I got him what I believe are the best ships to start with (all Rebels):

Core Set (X-Wing)

Saw’s Renegades (X-Wing & U-Wing)

Y-Wing (Rebel version)

I have often thought using two X-Wings, a U-Wing, and a Y-Wing can teach one the basics of ship handling and gradually moving up to using different abilities such as secondary weapons, Force users, talents, upgrades, bombs, etc... as one improves their skill as a player. What I am interested in is what would be a good list to start out with using the above ships.

Are you using 2.0 and do you have other upgrades (say from your collection) or have to build from just these? Do you have a conversion kit?

If you had a conversion kit and/or the t65 pack, Luke / Wedge / Norra is pretty good.

It depends on his attention span and how quick he is to pick things up. This is the first option two generics and the two tube brothers. It helps with formation flying and it's only 2 initiative steps.

T-65 X-wing - Red Squadron Veteran - 56
Red Squadron Veteran - (43)
Proton Torpedoes (13)
Servomotor S-foils (Open) (0)

BTL-A4 Y-wing - Gold Squadron Veteran - 38

Ion Cannon Turret (5)

UT-60D U-wing - •Benthic Two Tubes - 55
•Benthic Two Tubes - Cavern Angels Marksman (47)

T-65 X-wing - •Edrio Two Tubes - 45

A more advanced list look like this it isn't particularly good but you feel clever moving the tokens.

BTL-A4 Y-wing - •“Dutch” Vander - 51
•“Dutch” Vander - Gold Leader (40)
Dorsal Turret (3)
Agile Gunner (8)

T-65 X-wing - •Garven Dreis - 47
•Garven Dreis - Red Leader (47)

UT-60D U-wing - •Benthic Two Tubes - 55
•Benthic Two Tubes - Cavern Angels Marksman (47)
Perceptive Copilot (8)

T-65 X-wing - •Edrio Two Tubes - 45
•Edrio Two Tubes - Cavern Angels Veteran (45)

Total: 198/200

When in doubt less is more you can always load up on generics and Luke.

Everything will be new and therefore 2.0. He will not need any conversion kits unless he decides later to incorporate 1.0 ships into his fleet and will need to purchase a conversion kit. My goal was to start him off with a collection of small-based ships and one medium-based ship that could endure some punishment so he could stay in a game for a longer period of time so he may learn. I may also give him one of my B-Wings with the appropriate cards to give him another option of using a rather tanky ship.

I rather like the first list because of its simplicity and learning pilot abilities. I have flown the Two-Tube brothers many times myself and doesn't take much practice to master their abilities.

Agreed. Feedback like this is what I am seeking. Thank you.
