Energy Barrier is Way More Flexible than it Might Appear

By SpiderMana, in Marvel Champions: The Card Game

So it’s a really cool card, but I keep noticing that it has fewer and fewer limitations than I expect.

The newest bit I’ve noticed is that it procs off of any damage. So She-Hulk with Focused Rage can literally draw two cards and deal two damage to one or two enemies if she’s able to spend the resources to get an Energy Barrier out.

Really looking forward to trying these out in more contexts. :D

It’s a good card, but why does every good card have to be called “broken”?

I mean. Fair.

Idk man I’m just excited about that card, tbh. It’s super useful, and I can’t find any reason you can’t stack them? A lot more excited to try She-Hulk protection now.

Wouldn’t it prevent one and then do one to the source which is you (I would Assume you are the source of Focused Rage), for 0 net gain.

Don’t have card in front of me, but I think the damage is to the specific source, not just any enemy.

Nope:

Uses (3 reflection counters). Interrupt When you would take any amount of damage, remove 1 reflection counter from here → prevent 1 of that damage and deal 1 damage to an enemy.

That was my assumption on the wording; thus my excited surprise.

Tried out Protection She-Hulk vs the Sinister Sixish (Rhino w/Electro, Scorpion, and Tombstone sets) and the number of times I was able to Focused Rage into damaging an enemy instead of myself was great. Even took down a tough card at a pivotal moment, and managed to knock him out right to 0 HP with 6 threat on his main scheme, plus 2 Crisis side schemes and Breakin’ and Takin’ still out. I especially didn’t think I’d make it when a Scorpion boost card stunned me that round.

As for Energy Barrier itself, I didn’t even realize until the end of my Solo Iron Man run that any Tech Upgrades increase his hand size. So three copies of Energy Barrier not only gives you a bounceable resource via Stark Tower, but better odds of getting a decent hand size in Hero mode more quickly.

I love Enhanced Awareness/Reflexes, but Energy Barrier might be my favorite card in the new sets.

I’m afraid not. Taking the damage is part of the cost of Focused Rage. If you don’t take the damage, you don’t draw the card.

Disagree. Focused rage triggers the damage, that covers its cost, energy shield then cancels it after the cost would be considered paid

Energy Barrier Triggers when you would take damage - it prevents that damage. You haven’t paid the cost of taking the damage, so you don’t get the effect of Focused Rage. You could use the combo to deal an extra damage, but not with the Card Draw.

While thematically, the combo doesn’t make a ton of sense, can you actually show us from the Rules Reference where this breaks down? I don’t see it under the Costs section.

Cost- first paragraph second sentence describes some abilities have a cost in the text that “must be paid” to use the ability. 1st bullet point describes that text before the arrow is a cost.

Focused Rage therefore has a cost of exhausting focused rage and dealing She-Hulk a damage to use the ability.

If you use Energy Barrier, the timing means it’s triggered ‘if you would take damage’ (so you haven’t taken damage) and it prevents 1 of that damage. If you prevent the 1 damage from Focused Rage, you have not taken 1 damage so you have not paid the cost of Focused Rage, so the ability can not complete.
