Will FFG reprint base game & expansions?

By jcikal, in Battlelore

I don't see a specific target date for either the base game nor its expansions (100 Years war, Skirmish, Marauders, etc) on the upcoming section and that worries me. Does FFG still plan on reprinting the base and expansions? If so, what's the approx date of release? Will there be any modifications done to either the base game or expansions or will they be the same as was previously released by DOW?

I have been told on good authority that this is unlikely to occurr anytime soon which saddens me. The issue seems to be cost. FFG will need to raise the price for base BattleLore beyond what it is at now.

The price I heard was high but not out of the realm for what most epic ffg games cost now. Perhaps they are weighing their options and will see if demand for it builds back up again.

If I were in the market for a BattleLore games I would be really upset if I couldn't get a new one for an unknown amount of time.

If anyone has any addtional news or a correction to this, better yet, someone from FFG weighing in, please give us an update!!

I know where i can get a copy of the DoW Battlelore core set, i was wondering how much of a change was made from that to the current versions, i know its current out of print, but i don't want to invest in something that i have to completely rebuild to use.

I think I understand what you are asking here, but apologies if my rephrasing of the question is off the mark: "When FFG does decide to release a "core" version of BattleLore, will my DoW version become obsolete?" The current answer is: Possibly FFG knows the answer, but nobody else really does.

While I would be very surprised if anything that FFG does with the game would render the current base game obsolete, I wouldn't be flabbergasted - probably not even nonplussed ;) I have tired of wondering/worrying about this, and instead am just waiting for the Dwarves and Humans to get the "Horrific Horde treatment" that the goblins have: Race specific CtA cards and a couple of more specialist units to round out (complete, if you will) the respective race specific armies. At that point the game will have reached a satisfyingly full state, to me. I will be disappointed if FFG chooses to stop there, but right now, I've no reason to expect anything else.

I view the current attitudes towards the lack of a core game as a major hurdle to the game continuing with any sort of commercially viable continuity. In my opinion there are already several derogatory opinions of the game - overly expensive and disjointed expansions, lore not well integrated into the C&C game/a tack on, mishmash of confusing and contradictory rules sets, no future - none of which I agree with save the last (which in no way prevents me from enjoying the wonderful game that has taken shape through its first few years), but it is hard to persuade against those perceptions in its current state.

I don't expect it, don't feel entitled to it, but would love to hear a genuine statement about the solid future plans of BattleLore (the game, not the core brand for medieval tactical warfare games gran_risa.gif ).

Look towards the bottom of the upcoming page. They have the core set and some of the earlier expansions listed.

In the dreaded-RED llorando.gif

Reprints seem to hustle their way out of the red relatively fast.

The Gears of War game I've been looking forward to has been in purple for what feels like years.

These particular releases have not hustled their way out of the red with a fleet pace. For all intensive purposes they've been red for 2 years, and I am pretty sure they've been on the Upcoming page as In Development for over a year. Last official word pertaining to the base game was that it cannot be done the way it was initially released, but nothing concrete since then on what will be done.

My fingers are crossed that we will, in the coming weeks, read a preview of a Dwarf expansion to match the Horrific Hordes, and that when doing so FFG will also be forthcoming about the future of the base game. My fond hope is to log on one morning to find FFG have unveiled a Dwarf expansion, and let us know what the FFG Battlelore Base-set will look like (as well as some info on the various other expansions on the upcoming page). We shall see.

It would be interesting to see FFG bring out a new base-set with two or three new races - ie: not humans, goblins and dwarves. Although I doubt this particular option (neat as it would be), I think FFG will make an announcement about this sometimes soonish... I hope!

Cheers,

Giles.

I'm not holding my breath that anything more will be appearing in the near future. I would suspect that even if they re-release the core set, it will be a scaled down version or the price will go up. In an interview with the developer of Battle of Westeros, FF cannot reprint the game and keep it at the same cost. Obviously the reprint is possible, but then at what price will they have to sell it to make the reprint viable and will people buy it at that price?

I've always suspected that FF purchased Battlelore to obtain the rules so they could rework them and repackage as a new game. With Battle for Westeros, it appears to some extent, that may have been true.

I'm optimistic. I think Battlelore will see some more support, although I am sure that the base set will have a different look to it - in fact the world of Battlelore may have a different look to it when (if) FFG get to it.

Just glancing down the board game forums here I can see that Battlelore ranks number 6 of all the board games (some 45) that have forums on this website for number of topics, and number 5 for the number of posts. It is not the newest game on the list certainly, but it's also far from the oldest. Battlelore is still very much talked about - even when compared to all of FFGs other board games. It ranks number 7 on FFGs stats page out of all things that can be added to your collection - board games, silver line games, LCGs, RPGs etc. for 'most played', and number 8 for 'Community Favourites'. Does this mean FFG will support it? Maybe, maybe not. But I certainly hope it's a good sign they will!

Cheers,

Giles.

I hope you are right. I just not that optimistic. I think FF purchase the game for just one reason; to get an established (& popular) set of rules for their own game. I'm curious if doing that saved them money over developing a set of rules from scratch.

Well quite a few months later they still languish in red. I'd love to get the goblin and dwarf expansions, but sadly the secondary market has them priced too high for me.

I'd also like to point out that I am very excited that Hundred Years War is "on the boat". So hopefully we should see that soon. I'll be picking up a copy. aplauso.gif

Not to harsh your buzz, but I still see Hundred Years' War showing as in development. This expansion is one of those tagged to be "repurposed", meaning it will be the French edition, but with the French Language cards swapped out for English Language cards (and, if I understand correctly, the rule book will either not be included or be in French, with the English rules available online). How this relates to Hundred Years' War still showing as "in development" I am not sure, but that was updated 10/19/2010 (whereas the core game is still showing 10/9/2009, and it is also tagged to be repurposed).

Bearded Brave is showing as on the boat, and Code of Chivalry is showing as at the factory, for those interested in a mini-update ;)

The above idea of packaging the base set with different races not in the original would be a fantastic idea to get old fans to buy a new base set of the game while introducing new players to the system. I don't mind if the new base set is smaller, but I wouldn't want them to change the cards and tiles without changing the minis too.

Toddrew I noticed that as soon as I typed it, but there's no edit button for posts that I've noticed.

Caradoc, I agree with those sentiments as well.

If you act quickly, I think you have about 5-10 minutes after making a post to have the edit option available at the top of that particular post. Not sure what the time limit is about....
