1.0 Player wanting to return to 2.0

By DiggityDug, in X-Wing

Hello all!

I am an older 1.0 player, with a tackebox full of ships. 6 TF, 4 Tie Advanced, 4 Tie Defenders, 4 Tie bombers, just to name a few of my swarms. I have multiple y wings, x wings, a wings, two decimators and more.

Do I really need to buy two empire, two rebel, and a scum conversion kits for this game? Is there a faq anywhere with any of the dials unchanged? Could I download the dials an print them on stickers and just glue them to the bottom of the cardboard I already have?

Thanks,

Diggity

I would get 1 Empire and 1 rebel conversion kit along with a new core set.

then sell off spare ships on eBay as cost recovery.

You might also be able to get some of the ships that are catered for in the conversion kits that you don’t yet have on eBay etc.

First of all, hello & welcome back!

I would recommend looking at the FAQ section of the X-wing 2.0 product page as it lists out the ship-contents for every conversion kit and then looking at a squad builder; you don't need 4 Defender conversions unless you plan to play Epic, for example. Any "pieces" you have extra can be sold/traded for ones you may be short.

Welcome back!! 2.0 is great. I do miss some of the cheeky unbalanced shenanigans of 1.0 sometimes, but the tradeoff is having a much more solid game.

I’m with @Storgar : don’t rush to convert absolutely everything just yet. It gets expensive to chase that, and in reality, one Empire & one Rebel conversion should let you play a big bunch of lists. And as an added bonus, you’ll get a couple of TIE Fighter dials in the Rebel kit that’ll help fill out how many Imperial TIEs you can fly, as well!

I’d get stuck in with those for a while before deciding what to do with the rest of your collection. Taking the plunge with another round of conversion kits is always an option. Selling off extras might be something you consider as you get a feel for how the ships are different in 2.0. And they are definitely different; fly the TIE Advanced x1 for an example. I like the new x1 a lot, mind you. But there are some ships like the Z-95 that I just don’t enjoy as much in 2.0 , where I’ve downsized my collection.

Another option is picking up additional conversion stuff piecemeal off eBay. I’ve done that more than I probably should. But sometimes you can find pretty good deals if there’s just one or two ships that you don’t have enough conversion stuff for.

Start with one conversion for empire and one for rebel. Don’t buy a second kit until you really need to, or buy the parts piecemeal. I know multiple guys in my group got a second kit only once they hit a one off sale locally or something like that. Maybe bide your time on that?

When I switched, all I bought was one Empire Conversion kit and the 2E Core Set. I played for many months before I decided to start converting other things over, and that was getting a First Order Conversion kit.

I still have not bothered to convert my Rebel, Resistance, or S&V forces yet. Nor, have I bought into the Republic or CIS factions. I was thinking about it for the Gas Clouds, but then they announced the upcoming card packs which will include them, so I am waiting for that.

Here's a site that let's you print out bases and dials: https://proxy.karchfamily.com/

It's great to have folks come back into the game! Glad to have you.

And here's a site that lets you watch videos and filter them by ship, faction, date, etc. very handy to lean how unfamiliar ships and factions fly: http://xba.azurewebsites.net/

The only reason you'd need multiple conversion kits is if you plan on flying your entire collection at once, in Epic format or some such. The contents of the conversion kits (combined with the new Core Set) provide almost everything you need to field any legal standard format combination, and then some.

There are exceptions - I am that FIVE. CARTEL. MARAUDERS guy, and I had to pick up a couple of extra dials, tiles and cards on t h secondary market for competitive play - but for the most part, you'll never need more than one of each kit unless you simply have to have every ship you own 2.0 ready at exactly the same time.

Good luck, have fun, 2.0 is amazing!

Hi Diggity! This was the site I was talking about.

Also, you don't need new dials for Tie Fighters. They are the only ship that stays EXACTLY the same!

Other than the across the board change from green difficulty to blue difficulty.

fyi the individual conversions cost more than you'll get for selling a ship. with shipping they average 9 dollars per a conversion, while most ships sell for 5. so if you need more than 2 or 3 its not worth it.

I'd recommend you abandon swarms or buy multiple conversions, if you convert at all

Depends if you want to covert your full collection over.

I was in a similar boat to you at the start of second edition. I had an extensive collection of Rebel, Empire and Scum. I ended up purchasing two conversion kits per faction. Don't do this, lol.

With the core set and an Empire conversion kit you'll end up with 6 TIE Fighters, but a TIE expansion on its own and you'll have a TIE Swarm, but in my experience I've not swarmed anything from Empire or Rebels and could have gotten away with one conversion kit.

Buy a core set and conversion kit for either Rebels or Empire (your preference) or ideally both so you get maximum choice (and upgrade cards) then if you find a list you really like but don't have enough stuff for it, see about trading some stuff away or if you end up with multiple lists that would require another conversion kit..well there you go.

I wish you luck with your dive into 2nd edition!

This site is very handy for comparing dials between 1st and 2nd editions:

You guys are fantastic. Thanks for the advice. I am always impressed on how intellectual, social, and mature X-wing payers are as opposed to some of those *other* war games. Thanks again for well thought out responses.

I think I am going to get an Empire and Rebel conversion kit, and then see where that leaves me with my ships. I may print and glue any remainders. I may try trading for them.

Thanks again.
