Going in a good direction

By maniakmedic, in Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Got Cap, MM, and GG in the mail today. A little bit later than I would have liked, but at least they did arrive.

Played one round vs. Rhino with Cap to get a feel for the deck. I really like it, but I plan on tweaking it a bit. I'll likely remove a Quinjet and replace it with a third Make the Call. Also considering how to fit Morale Boost in. And given the resource generation and cost negation that Cap's cards have, Triskelion might be a good add; combined with Avengers Tower, get five allies out, discard Strength in Numbers to draw five cards, and use Avengers Assemble to ready the allies so they can be used again. Granted, it's very obvious synergy, but it's fun to see how the cards can work together.

Tomorrow I'll be giving MM a try. I was kind of "meh" when she was announced, but after watching the FFG video of her deck in action with Cap and Thor, I'm looking forward to trying it out. I'm really impressed with how the designers have managed to make each hero feel unique in how they work. Maybe it's because I love puzzles and figuring out how things work together, but I can see enjoying working out how to play even heroes I'm not very interested in.

This makes me even more excited to see how they handle Dr. Strange.

Dude I played a Leadership Captain Teamup game last night (Cap America and Cap Marvel) and it was everything I hoped! While my ideal Double Leadership build for personal tastes would be Stark and Cap, my friend wanted to do Captain Marvel, and she fit really well. We put all of the Avengers allies in her deck, since Spider-Woman is an Avenger and Agent 13 isn’t.

Won the game vs Stage 2 Norman/Goblin dealing I think all of his health in the one round?

He used Vision’s ability to boost attack, along with Inspired, he had three other Avengers Allies, played an Avengers Assemble for them to all attack twice, and I played Get Ready on Vis on top of that 😁

So did you take the SHIELD allies then and Lockjaw?

Yeah, basically. He still had Fury, and I had the second copy of Hawkeye, but otherwise we just split them all up.

Hopefully we see a SHIELD synergy card, at some point.

One thing I had a lot more fun with than I anticipated when I decided to get into this game is customizing scenarios to fit a specific narrative idea I have in mind. For sure, Risky Business by itself, with the switch between Obsorn and Goblin, is very evocative in this regard and I think this is a beautifully successful design. And also I kind of felt compelled to try Spider-Man against Mutagen Formula (did it with Protection to try out the new cards, and it worked very well) and a Marvel movie pretty much played out in my mind as I played this.

But then with Captain America I also had fun putting together an encounter deck that included as many Hydra minions as I could -- Rhino with Bomb Scare and Legions of Hydra to start with. Captain America Protection was as strong as I thought it would be when I played this, and this was a fun game. To crank up the heat a little, I will try next with Klaw, who synergizes better with minions, and I will add Cap's nemesis set directly to deck, along with the two Hydra Mercenaries from Rhino's set. Captain America tossing his shield at a bunch of Hydra agents is really fun.

I tried the new Justice cards with Spider-Man against the three other modular sets from the Green Goblin pack, featuring Scorpion, Electro and Tombstone, because I understand these bad dudes were apparently Spider-Man villains at some point. I felt this was thematic to try them all together, using Standard Rhino again (because I was initially unsure of the resulting difficulty). This was a lot of fun as well. It turned out ok because I was lucky a few times, but I can say that Scorpion seems a like a big pain, because he stuns a lot.

The new Justice cards are quite useful, especially Followed, which is probably one of my favorite Justice cards now. Of all the new Aspect cards though, my favorites, by a long shot, are Preemptive Strike and Energy Barrier (but then again Protection remains my favorite aspect in the first place).

Looking at everything I'm doing right now with this game, without even buying any kind of big story box, makes me believe this game is in a very, very good place to start with. I really like the direction this is taking too!

@Ascarel I haven't tried customizing scenarios, but I definitely want to. I'm really looking forward to upcoming villains to increase customization possibilities.

I've been leaning toward Leadership as my favorite aspect, especially with the new stuff that came with Cap (though Make the Call is probably still my favorite). But I also have a soft spot for Aggression. There's just something about throwing around lots of damage, then throwing more. And I can't wait to use Hall of Heroes and Get Over Here! in Aggression decks.

This has to be one of my favorite card games ever. They've just done such a good job capturing the feel of a knock-down drag-out superhero fight that fits each individual hero. The only thing I'm missing is playing with a group that knows how to make the different heroes work together. I've been the one introducing the game to other people so I'm constantly playing with newbies. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it would be nice to get more time playing with people who know the game well enough that I don't have to help them figure out what to do.

What I can't wait for is Cap with a Super Soldier Serum fueled Jarnbjorn.

@Ascarel First thing that jumped into my mind after riffling through the Gobbie pack - use Rhino (who brings Shocker and Sandman) with the Vulture Nemesis set and the Electro and Scorpion Modular Encounter sets shuffled in for something of a Sinister Six throwdown.

Also, I'm very happy that Doc Ock hasn't been thrown in as a minion, nemesis or modular set (yet). It gives a guy hope for him getting the full scenario treatment that he deserves!!
