Bombing Runs

By Shadowshand, in Star Wars: Legion

Forgive me if this has been brought up before. I was watching some youtubers play the remake of Empire at War, which I loved playing back in 2006 when it came out. Something I noticed and loved doing when playing land-battles was bombing runs, where TIE Bombers for the Empire, Y-Wings for the Rebels, would come down from orbit, and bomb an area that was marked for them to drop their payload.

I was thinking, FFG could have a lot of fun putting something like that into this game for Legion, maybe for a senario, or command function. Maybe be used in games with Grand Armies or even bigger, and only once in a single game, etc. Just a thought.

Coordinated Bombardment does this, but I agree, it would be cool to be reflected in a Battle card

Totally forgot that one. lol But yeah, something similar but more generic would be cool.

There are homebrew ideas for Forward Air Controllers or Artillery Observers that use generic officers to supply command card effects like this. Have a dig about on the forums and reddit.

Man, Empire at War is one of my Favorite games of all time, and It would be freaking amazing if that as added into the game!

A battlefield under heavy bombardment could be an interesting condition card, but I don't know how Legion would handle scatter.

Most likely a card pack with additional components, same as they just did with xwing and the 2 battlefied expansions.

I have no doubt it's on the horizon, just maybe not a priority just yet given the heat they are feeling over thier current release schedule

Looks like this was revealed at LVO, so I figured I'd revive this thread and let y'all know.

Interesting that Bombing run lets vehicles carry the beacons, but not pick them up.

So bombing run is really suicide bombing run? The unit which drops it will get caught in the blast. Am I missing something obvious on the card?

While the explosion does have surge to crit, it does not have impact. So at least damage should be minimal to vehicles with armor. Also you do not have to detonate the bombs the same turn you drop them giving you the chance to get out of range. However this does give your opponent the chance to claim said bomb.

So this will be in the vital assets then?

It looks very nice.

I swore I posted the picture, but I guess it didn't follow through. Thank you for posting the picture and providing better context to what I mentioned.

The card says "At the end of Activation Phase each player may detonate 1 unclaimed objective token..." It doesn't say: "... 1 of his unclaimed objective tokens..." So you're able to detonate the tokens dropped by your opponent!

That's an objective for fast or sturdy vehicles! Hooray for my Speeder Bikes!

You can drop the bomb before you move out, it's a free action so it does not have to be dropped at the end of the activation. Most vehicles will be able to zoom out of range. Also, the bomb does not hit you if it does not have line of sight to you, so you can just hide :P

You can only detonate a token that one of your units dropped as per the second part of that sentence. However, it seems you can claim a bomb dropped by your opponent, provided it didn't detonate yet, and then carry it and drop as your own :D

This looks like a really fun scenario. Right now I'm thinking of Airspeeder activating last and doing compulsory, move, attack, drop, detonate sequence. It gives you an early advantage in scenario, thus allowing you to focus on preventing enemy drops and thus securing a win.

You're absolutly right! With both parts of your post.

I like the idea of R2 carrying one of the bombs. R2 wants to get into your opponent's deployment zone anyway. Might as well also drop off a bomb.

Instead of 3PO's head imagine a bomb!

(In 3PO's voice) "Oh my. This mission simply blow's my mind."

SO you want to drop your bombs in the opponent's deployment zone? Or make the opponent drop their objective token within range 1 of their deployment zone?

I've had games where I couldn't get stupidly Nimble Rebels out of the deployment zone.

both things are good, though you have to have claimed and dropped an opponents objective to be able to detonate it. basic rule of thumb is don't let your or your opponents objective tokens hang around in or near your own deployment zone and your opponent cant score VPs.

as mentioned above I potentially foresee a lot of last turn suicide runs by units to dive for the opponents deployment zone and drop the objective tokens, even if the unit dies before the end of the turn, unless the objective gets picked up by an opponents unit you still get to detonate it at the end of the turn for a VP, bearing in mind that you can only detonate 1 objective a turn as well.

Interesting wording in Roll Out & Bombing Run. Roll Out lets you deploy friendly vehicles w/in range 1 of your deployment zone but Bombing Run says a unit has to be w/in the deployment zone to have an objective token assigned to it. Does the wording in Roll Out extend the deployment zone or does Bombing Run's setup prevent speeders from getting too much of a head start?

The latter, you’d probably not want to run them both.

It seems ffg was quite clever. Adds utility and value to some under represented units without having to retcon points or stats..... kudos
