Skirmish Obi Wan Torn Up By Grievous!

By BenBot, in Army Building

I played a skirmish game with Obi-Wan and some clones the other day and got cut up by Grievous in a bad way!

I likely just played it poorly but with Obi-Wan’s fewer attack dice and no double attack turns I felt at a disadvantage.

Is it better to just focus Obi-Wan on other targets and use my Clones for Grievous?

I played against a Grievous list with two full groups of B1s and a unit of Droidekas. Here’s the list I ran:

++ Standard (Galactic Republic) [497 Points] ++

+ Commander +

•Obi-Wan Kenobi [189 Points]: Force Reflexes, Tenacity

+ Corps +

Phase I Clone Troopers [77 Points]: Z-6 Phase I Trooper

Phase I Clone Troopers [77 Points]: Z-6 Phase I Trooper

Phase I Clone Troopers [77 Points]: Z-6 Phase I Trooper

Phase I Clone Troopers [77 Points]: Z-6 Phase I Trooper

++ Total: [497 Points] ++

I’ve really enjoyed running Rex at 500pts but I’d like to do better with Obi-Wan if I can. Thanks for any insight!

Yeah, Grievous is better in close combat, but you can use the force!

My recommendations:

+Focus your fire on Grievous first in order to increase your chances in close combat and to give him suppression. Killing B1s isn‘t so effective.

+Is Grievous in combat and has already attacked? Use force push with Obi-Wan to get him out of combat. Then you might be able to shoot on him with your whole army.

+Aggressive Tactics is amazing. You probably have to get rid of a Z6, but it‘s worth it, if you include Force Push as well.

+And finally, yes. It might be good to avoid close combat, if he is still at full health!

Obi-Wan's command card that gives him a standby token is his "double attack" turn, you just have to play it right.

There's a reason Obi-wan barely beat Grievous mano a mano a mano a mano a mano, and had to use an uncivilized blaster to do it ;)

Ooh which command card and how please? I still it something with “Hello There!”?

Oh wait, do you use the Standby attack before he activates? Then he can attack again on his activation?!

If he has two standby tokens before activating does he lose the second one if he attacks with the first?

Ooh interesting... thank you!

Yes, you use Hello There! to gain a Standby token, and then the other tokens, and you don't activate Obi-wan until later.

Two Standby tokens are useless, since once you make an attack, you remove any Standby tokens you have.

Any chance you can be more specific with the composition of your opponents list? would be interested to know how they filled out the list with only 4 activations, feels like you could utilize suppression on Grievous more if you aren't getting a lot of suppression yourself from the fewer activations.

It was the players first game of legion (lots of other war game experience) and I think they only had a core set to build from. I think he had an almost 30pt bid or something.

I held back a little as it was a learning game and I forgot Pierce still works agains Impervious but I was still surprised at how brutal Grievous was.

This is close to what he ran minus a few upgrades:

Skirmish Droids Core Set (423/800)
Separatists

General Grievous (175)
- DT-57 Annihilator (12)
- Hunter (6)
= 193 total points

B1 Battle Droids (36)
- E-5C B1 Trooper (18)
- B1 Battle Droid (6)
= 60 total points

B1 Battle Droids (36)
- E-5C B1 Trooper (18)
- B1 Battle Droid (6)
= 60 total points

Droidekas (100)
- HQ Uplink (10)
= 110 total points

I would recommend putting both Force Ref and Force Push on Obi, but if you have to drop one, I’d drop Ref. Force Push is an ability that Grievous can not match and gives Obi greater board control. Also keep in mind that a Force Push is a movement, so it can trigger any clones with a standby. So really, if you start the turn with Grievous and Obi in melee (Grievous running in and attacking him last round) you can Force Push Grievous so they’re now out of melee, shoot with all your clones that have a standby (cause the movement triggers their attacks), then take an aim or dodge on Obi, then move Obi back into melee with Grievous and have Obi’s attack. If Grievous doesn’t die, your dice hate you. 😆 Republic doesn’t have much, but what they do have is really good and can beat CIS more than not imho, but it is very close between the two factions..

This is great info! Thank you!

I’ve been playing rebels since launch and taking lots of dodge actions... I’m still getting used to all the new Standby tricks and Fire Support tricks etc.

I was debating between Force Reflexes and Force Push knowing how strong Force Push is but I was worried about keeping Obi-Wan safe on the approach. In practice it seems that he gets plenty of Dodge tokens from other places and I might be able to use the extra 5pts somewhere else...

I feel like it’s worth trying Obi-Wan again with all these new tips! I am definitely taking Grievous down the next time I see him... 😝 👍

It does take a little practice to use Force Push, so if it doesn’t work well for you the first time around, don’t give up. Also the scenario I outlined, does take a bit to setup, after all each standby is an action that the clones have to take. The other thing about standby, is more board control. Your opponent will be reticent to approach while you have the standby’s up and may try to move in the following round when you have to start from scratch. The Republic faction is the most unique of all the factions imho. It was designed around each unit supporting each other, and if you play it that way, it can do some significant damage to any list. Good luck with FP. 🤞
