Wood and plaster in the movies

By TauntaunScout, in Star Wars: Legion

Maybe it's the newer high definition tv's. Or maybe it's the millionth viewing. But I suddenly find myself able to see through a lot of the SW movie magic and the "metal and plastic" movie sets are now clearly wood and plaster and stuff. Maybe I'm just sitting too close the tv. And I still like it better than CGI. But:

Jabba's big metallic door for example, I can clearly see tool marks that spread plaster around on it.

The Endor bunker, I am able to see the wood grain, where plywood was simply painted grey.

Anyone else noticing this stuff?

dont give them anymore ideas to have a reason to go make changes to the "olden stuffs"....

but i hear ya. A buddy said way back in the 720p days that making movies/tv shows will change because of all the details you can see now compared to the same "olden days"...im sure this is why digital post effects are so important.

can't have them crows feet showing up like the grand canyon on these 8k tv's

Its probably a result of modern high definition. the movies weren't made with the expectation of there being high enough resolution to see those details so no effort was made to hide them. its a problem the shows up on a lot of old shows and movies when they are remastered.

High def is the problem... poor resolution is what made old effects work.

I agree with you, but I definitely do not mind. Even before HD, it was so obvious that Stormtrooper armor was just basic PVC. I love watching classic films, which have the same dated, obvious things to notice, now. But those things give it charm, and when a movie still looks good, despite things like this, all the more to respect the incredible achievement with the tools at-hand.

Empire still looks absolutely incredible, imo.

Umm, yeah, they used wood and spackle and just painted it. You didn't seriously think they actually make that stuff out of metal did you?

Don’t worry about the movie magic. Try hard not to focus on the details and it works better.

But I’ve even noticed a handful of sequences in the Mandalorian that are just painfully bad effects .... on a high def tv. I’m sure on a standard TV or even 1080p they’d be pretty good.

I still enjoy the stories, and to me that’s the ageless part of the original trilogy. I still feel something when Luke confronts Vader (especially in Return of the Jedi).

Hmm, my old dvds of the original 1977-83 versions don't have all this High-flaluting technology of which you speak. They look the same as my old VHS tape I had when I was little. (And Han still shoots first)

My favorite instance of this that came from this game was painting up the DLT stormtrooper backpack, going back to watch the movie and being like.... they just spraypainted a bunch of garbage black, didn't they?

It was the 70's.... back then that was top notch.

I still remember the bts for a rerelease where they showed an atat visable through a speeder cockpit frame on hoth and how they "repaired" it. The original effect was just transposing the cockpit footage over another reel of the atat

"I see 4 lights!!!!"

No CGI, no 3D printers, no CNC machines, just wood, foam, plaster, air ducking, lead paint, flash light bulbs, plastic switches and old army stuff from hardware stores, radioshack and military surplus.

This is the way.

No but I never used to see it before either. Course, few things have been subjected to as many re-watchings as Star Wars.

A little off topic but related... Have you seen the article that shows where some of the stuff came from? Like IG88's head was a repurposed light from the cantina and Bossk's flight suit came from and old Dr. Who set?

IG-88's head was a drink dispenser in the cantina and before that it was a part of a Rolls Royce engine.
