Army Painter Laser Lock has worked well for us and goes beyond standard engagement range.

I don’t like laser line devices because hands shake and they’re harder to line up on both dots without moving one. On the other hand they don’t risk bumping.

True it takes some practice lining up while also trying to get around the ship models themselves.
Get a tape measure.
I find that a badge reel can work really well, if you can find one long enough.

I've seen folks use small handyman levels for this purpose that are made to sit on a table rather than being held. Simply move it around the table until the line corresponds with what you're trying to measure and it works out fine. A bit less convenient than a laser line pen but more precise.
I still think its not ok for FFG to introduce a game mechanic that you cannot actually implement without third party accessories.

You mean like, Solar Corona?

But you don't need any extras, they simply make playing easier.

To be fair, I'm sure FFG just expects us to understand that even if they did make new tools... they'd all be warped, the wrong size, or misprinted somehow... sooo...

Really? 😉

Well, I mean, it can be hard to determine if your arcs are facing the cities side from half a table away - which is ehh the rulebook tells you what to do...
Wait, you all don't put a massive heat lamp on the Corona side? And drink a cold Corona ?

Iny experience bracing your elbow against the table (occasionally using both hands for more stability, elbows braced, palms pressed together. Basically the painting position) offers sufficient stability.
Except that the line of the laser gets larger the further away the laser is from the target of the projection. Add lasers held at an angle to that and you can get conflicting results if the decision is unsure and the ships (or corona) far apart.

And this might matter if this game were all about precise accuracy. The tools created and distributed by FFG have a much higher degree of variability and greater margin of error than you'll find in any laser tool.

Really, they way the game is designed, it
should
be. Unfortunately, like you said, the tools they give (and really even the lack of precise details on the ship tokens) confirm that the game isn't meant to hold a precise game state.
This is one of those weird instances where, though I love collecting the models and using them in meat space (and likely still would), the game would be infinitely better off built into a standalone digital format. If EA wasn't in charge of the video game rights for Star Wars, I'd be harassing everyone at FFG to make an official digital version.

Well, also, even the rules say to be as accurate as you can, but doesn't emphasize precision, to the micrometer accuracy

Don't forget Hyperspace Migration!

I was trying to pick the earliest example 😀
