Hocus Focus

By Sm00thB0r3, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I am currently running the following list with reasonable success, but I'm looking to improve as it's not as fine-tuned as I would like it.

  • Braylen Stramm - A/SF-01 B-Wing - Marksmanship (1), Jamming Beam (0)
  • Ten Numb - A/SF-01 B-Wing - Marksmanship (1), Jamming Beam (0)
  • Garven Dreis - ARC-170 Starfighter - Lando Calrissian (2)
  • Thane Kyrell - T-65 X-Wing - Servomotor S-foils (0)

Total is 200 points

I've beaten FIVE.CARTEL.MARAUDERS. A F/O TIE S/F list and a Boba/Fenn list with the above list comfortably but I'm having trouble with swarms (specifically Seperatists).

Should I change anything with the build or keep trying to plug away and eventually get a win against the Seppies?

you may want to squeez in a veteran tail gunner on the arc to fire twice letting you spend multiple focus tokens giving them to your other ships.

Looks like a solid "probably doesn't win worlds, but you won't have a miserable afternoon sort of list," but needs more Crack Shot.

  • I'd swap Marksmanship for Crack Shot . Best crit is what, Direct Hit? That adds a damage. What does Crack Shot do? Essentially creates a Direct Hit.
  • I'm unconvinced by Lando on Garven Dreis. Garven really wants a Focus, and Lando only gets him one 44% of the time (if I were the opponent, I'd pick Evade on blank-blank). As such, I'd just cut Lando and give Crack Shot to both Garven and Thane.
  • Crack Shot is perhaps boring, but it's almost surely the best talent in the game.

Something else to consider: is it ever worth it to switch Garven into an X-Wing?

  • That'd be more green dice (potentially better against a large number of weak shots), and a more maneuverable ship (that large base on an ARC can get awkward).
  • That only gains 2 poonts, which I'd use to maybe upgrade Crack Shot to Predator on Ten Nunb and either Garven or Thane. I like Predator on Ten, since a reroll makes it more likely you'll be able to spend the stress and open up his dial. Same logic for the X-Wings, where Predator can help generate the results you need to use their pilot abilities. I don't know whether Thane or Garven wants it more, but Ten seems like the more important one to take it.
  • But it's probably a pretty slim benefit. Mostly, I'd just fly whatever version--ARC or X-Wing--you enjoy more.

Might work.

I worry investing the cost of Baze/VTG into Garven Dreis is excessive. It seems great on paper, but I don't know that the geometry works out. Sometimes you wind up in the middle of enough enemies to make it worthwhile, but seems kind of like a rare occurrence.

Also, the issue with focus synergy is kinda... how many focus tokens do you need? Ten will often have "two" due to stress from a Focus -> Roll, Braylen has one, the fourth ship has one. Garven passing over one more isn't bad, but there's a limit to how many is valuable.

If I'm flying, I'm just sticking with a better 4th ship and not going too hard with Garven.

Idea 1:

  • Garven Dreis (ARC-170): Leia Organa, Veteran Tail Gunner
  • Braylen Stramm (B-Wing): Jamming Beam
  • Ten Numn (B-Wing): FCS, Jamming Beam
  • "Dutch" Vander (Y-Wing): naked

You get double mods on Braylen from Focus > Roll on up to two dice out of three or four. You get to share Lock with "Dutch" to Ten Numb for double mods and he can hold onto it with FCS. Garven has a Focus which he can share to "Dutch" for his double mods. If Ten Numb has Lock from previous rounds, Garven can get a Lock from "Dutch" instead. This way each ship has a potential of double modded attacks with a total of 11 Red Dice thrown at the enemy.

My issue with Thane Kyrell in this list, is that he shoots first, thus rarely proccing his pilot ability, which is absolutely amazing. My brother was flying a similar list, although Garven was sitting in an X-Wing instead of an ARC-170. And Thane did not proc a single time throughout over five games now.

Advice against swarms would be, spread out. Braylen does not need anyone else to trigger his double mods. Ten Numb wants to be within range 0-3 of "Dutch" who wants to be within 0-3 of Garven. You have a lot of freedom in how you move and engage.

Idea 2:

  • Garven Dreis (X-Wing T-65): Crack Shot
  • Braylen Stramm (B-Wing): Crack Shot
  • Ten Numb (B-Wing): FCS, Crack Shot
  • "Dutch" Vander (Y-Wing): Plasma Torpedoes

You get an additional attack dice on Y-Wing, especially fun against shielded targets. Y-Wing can also Reload one charge, if needs be of course. Crack Shots to help push the damage through and mostly the same mindset in flying the group. Braylen is a good flanker, as he doesn't need anyone to be at his peak. Ten Numb wants to stick somewhat closer to Y-Wing, same for Garven. But still they can cover a lot of ground with each pilot ability working up to Range 3.

How about a slightly different direction?

Ten Numb (48)
Crack Shot (1)
Jamming Beam (0)

Ship total: 49 Half Points: 25 Threshold: 4

Braylen Stramm (51)
Crack Shot (1)
Jamming Beam (0)

Ship total: 52 Half Points: 26 Threshold: 4

Heff Tobber (45)
Intimidation (3)
Lando Calrissian (2)
Pivot Wing (0)

Ship total: 50 Half Points: 25 Threshold: 4

Garven Dreis (X-Wing) (47)
Crack Shot (1)
Servomotor S-Foils (0)

Ship total: 48 Half Points: 24 Threshold: 3

Total: 199

  • Braylen Stramm
  • Ten Numb
  • Benthic Two Tubes: Perceptive Copilot
  • Edrio Two Tubes

You have three naked ships. Braylen has Focus and Rerolls. Ten has Focus and Focustress. Benthic shares a Focus to Edrio who can then take two actions, for double mods and reposition perhaps. My problem here is lack of Target Locks on enemies... Focus on itself is not powerful enough.

@theBitterFig thanks for your tips. I’ve since played 3 games with Crack Shot and agree while boring, is more effective than Marksmanship. Garven is now in an X-Wing and although I like the extra green die I have a soft spot for ARCs so will continue to experiment with both.
