3D Printed Razorcrest

By Scum4Life, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

A friend 3D printed me a Razorcrest so I painted it up, didn't turn out too badly, though the guns aren't quite right, too short as they printed a bit fuzzy so I trimmed them down.

It is the ship from the new "The Mandalorian" series on the Disney streaming service.

You need to stop what you are doing and go watch The Mandalorian. It's some of the best Star Wars ever. Seriously.

I don't do streaming, nor do i watch disney...

Looks good! I wonder how noticeable those printing lines are from a 'tabletop distance'?

So you're skipping episodes 7, 8 and 9 as well? 😁

I quite like the Mandalorian so far. Won't say it's one of the best series, but when it comes to Disney Star Wars I would rank it after Rogue One, but before the new trilogy (I hope Rise of Skywalker will change that!).

Moderators, what are the rules in here regarding blasphemy?

j/k...

Not too noticeable, I made it dirty and rusty to help mask that, as well as adding a few black and silver panels, to break up the grey.

I plan in using it as a standard in for a G1-A in some casual games soon :)

The show looks like it is very hard to watch given my susceptibility to shaky-cam headache. And that little snippet is the sort of shaky-cam I particularly despise. On the one hand I loved Rebels and Clone Wars so Filoni's involvement has my attention but it just looks dreadful to watch.

Good for you. Do you want a prize?

If you do, you can have some bone broth.

I was also one of those who Disliked the porgs.. and didn't think THEY were cute..

Do you see the difference between the drinking broth gif and the youngling in sheets gif? An entire episode with drinking broth camera style I am happy to watch. Youngling in sheets camera style gives me a headache and/or nausea over an entire episode. A whole lot of TV and movies have gotten very difficult to watch because they use so much youngling in sheets style.

I guess all I'd say is that it's hard to judge a series camera work from two gifs. Check out a trailer, that'd probably do a pretty good job at giving a better sense.

The trailer screams lots of shaky cam at me. I did get a look at the first sequence of the first episode and it was clearly post production shaky cam. Which suggests that scenes like youngling in sheets is going to be a pretty common. That's shaky camera for the sake of shaky camera. And with series you get a lot of directors and crews. So a series can swing widely between no shaky-cam and lots of shaky-cam and not always with the choice being a service to the story. I also tend to think shaky camera is very out of place in sci-fi and fantasy stories.

In sci-fi and fantasy I just don't get the shaky to make it real thing. Who are they trying to fool? The folks who don't get choked up at the beginning of "Up" in the montage of the old man's life with his wife I suppose. Blame Lucas and the prequels for it I guess.

Shaky camera is ubiquitous these days. Nearly everything has it to some degree or another. It is all over the cutscenes in video games even. I think a lot of the young film-makers who work on these streaming series think this is the way movies should look.

I also always get the sense that the creators aren't trusting their script. When the camera is shaking during exposition it always feels like the creators feeling a need to trick the audience into thinking there is something going to happen here so they don't zone out. They themselves don't find what they've put in front of the camera interesting.

I'm waiting for season seven of Clone Wars to hit Disney plus. I'll give Mandalorian a look then. I don't really use a streaming service especially in the fall during football season. I barely keep up with the four shows I DVR.

I hate, Hate, HATE shaky cam. I believe it started with the TV show Hill Street Blues. Everyone thought it was so edgy and cool. Now it's in everything. I can't stand it. I too especially hate the shaky cam for the sake of shaky cam scenes. Obviously I've had to learn to deal with it to some degree or I couldn't enjoy any TV or movies anymore.

With that said, the amount of shaky cam in the Mandalorian isn't enough to turn me off from the show. It's worth a look.

I also think shaky-cam is especially dreadful in scope aspect movies like Star Wars. It fundamentally conflicts with the two sensibilities at work.

I'm planning on adding the razor crest to by fleet as well. What maneuver dial and ship stats are you thinking about using?

G1-A seems like the best bet. Shape is close-enough to similar, and at some point Mando pulls a stop mid-fight.

I'm curious if those are something that can be sanded out or otherwise smoothed out with primer or something else on the surface that gets sanded down? Are those sorts of lines something that can be made less noticeable with color choice and shading (or not shading) and such?

The thing is pretty slick in any case but it does make me curious about what is achievable from the 3d printer and what can be done afterwards with the model. How much does the resolution of the 3d model effect those sorts of lines? Is some software just better? Is it all on the resolution of the 3d printer? Is that something the appearance of which can be changed by re-sizing the model?

Interesting. I would have guessed a U-wing would be closer since the razor crest seems to be a combat transport type craft; but i can see why the G1-A fits as well.

Well I guess you showed Disney! Not watching their stuff and missing out on some good entertainment!!!

No one cares if you watch it. It’s your loss. No one cares where and when you watch the movies. If you liked it or hated it. Yup... no one cares.
