FFG Live Thor/January Releases

By SpiderMana, in Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Reminder this is coming up in just a few hours! 1PM Central Time, Twitch or Youtube.

I’ll try to put any news/updates we learn from it in this post/thread as we go :)

3 things I hope happen: 1) he has the warriors 3 in his deck as allies and they all have 1* on thwart and attack. Each one is boosted by the others in play (possible 3 / 3) and all have 2 health with a cost of 2 / 3. 2) Destroyer is the nemesis (this is doubtful since the armor was created by Odin and he's super tough) We will most likely get Enchantress or Executioner. 3) Some kind of recall action with Mjölnir. Kind of like Caps shield toss, but it does one damage to all enemies on the board and if you pay a energy resource it will recall back for another damage or 2 damage if you commit 2 energy resources.

Since this is a LCG, I'm guessing you're best off getting everything that comes out to put together the best decks? Like LOTR the Card Game?

Or can you just buy what interests you?

Thor would definitely be a hero I would be interested in.

I mean, it really depends on how much you care to optimize your decks. You can just get the heroes you want, and they’re released with playable decks designed somewhat around the character’s abilities.

I'm sure they'd be playing, but I'm also assuming that if you want the best cards you need to get everything. I'm guessing, since I haven't picked up or played the game yet. But that is the nature of a LCG, yes?

Yes, the general rule with LCGs is that you stay current by keeping up with releases, and that’s certainly a necessary step with a competitive LCG in my view (since if you don’t keep up with the meta, you won’t compete). With a co op lcg that’s slightly different I think. Yes, it’s possible future scenarios will be hard to achieve without newer tools, but you are only competing with the game, not with other humans optimising their decks. I would rather not max out my deck and blow through the scenarios so I’m not going to be too cut throat with my deck building until I run into a situation that I’m struggling to handle with a more balanced deck.

I think for the moment at least, FFGs goal with this game is to create a game you can approach more like a tasting menu rather than a subscription- dipping into the parts you want without a requirement to grab everything.

Ms Marvel looks like she has interesting gameplay . Thor looks like a blast too!

I feel this. Optimization is fun, but I’ve had loads of fun playing through all of the core champions with each aspect—some of which pairings kindof suck, solo, tbh. Or at least against certain matchups.

I’m interested to see if Thor plays half as well with anything but Aggression, especially since I believe the “get over here” card was Aggression, and it seems perfectly tooled for him.

After studying last night's video and what else we've heard about them so far, I've been able to almost complete the card list spreadsheet for the 4 expansions in it.

Green Goblin's pack is missing the 2 modules that aren't in the standard setup for the 2 Scenarios. There's a total of 10 cards split between these two, so it's probably 2 5-card modules, with 3-4 distinct cards each. The Mutagen Formula scenario has 2 attachments we don't know of, although I think I saw one of them in the discard pile calle Pumpkin Bombs. I wonder if it's the same as the card in the Goblin Gimmicks module. This also might imply that Goblin Glider is the last card.

I believe that we've got a total of 9 reprinted cards in Captain America's pack: Hawkeye, 2 x Make the Call, 2 x The Power of Leadership, Mockingbird, Energy, Genius and Strength. That's 7 different cards. It's actually more than I thought and more than they said. We're still lacking the new Aggression card and a new Basic card that isn't in the pre-constructed deck. We also don't know what the rest of Baron Zemo's module does even if we have the card names, though I did glimpse part of the Side-scheme showing it has an acceleration icon.

Miss Marvel has 8 reprints: 2 x Get Behind Me!, 2 x The Power of Protection, Avengers Mansion, Energy, Genius and Strength. Which is 6 different cards. There's a basic card in the deck called Endurance that we haven't seen used: all we know is that it's a 1-cost upgrade. Also a new Aggression card again. We know that one of Thomas Edison's cards is a giant robot of some sort, but not what his Treachery is.

We know less about Thor (he was only announced yesterday) but have got some things. He's got 7-9 reprints: 2 x Chase them down, 2 x The Power of Aggression, Energy, Genius and Strength definitely but I'm going to suggest also a Helicarrier. There's also a Justice, Protection and Basic card outside the deck that we haven't seen. There were three cards that I only ever saw discarded and Thor's discard pile was too far away too read accurately - there appears to be a 0-cost Aggression event that he never used, a 5-cost neutral Ally with only a single name (Heimdall?) and a 3-cost neutral event. Again, we lack the full details of Loki's cards, but the Side-scheme is Acceleration again and may do something to do with Asgard cards when it is revealed.

Was that the Web-Shooter-y one? Exhausts for an energy resource three times? Or was that something else?

yeah, my guess is they said "5-6 reprints per deck" hoping people would just believe them and not check for themselves. i refuse to believe that they just forgot all their decks had 8-9 reprints. they have to be downplaying the real number on purpose(likely because if they outright said the real number it would piss a lot of people off), which is super annoying

Mmmm nah, I think they’re just giving a base number that most decks will be around? And it seems easy enough for someone in their position to overlook the fact that 3 generic resources and 2 copies of Aspect resources is already 5... an average of 4 non-resource reprints seems fine to me, and I’m honestly really glad for some reprints. Without extra copies of Make the Call and even Hawkeye, I’d be that much more tempted to get a second core to play a pair of Leadership heroes together.

No, that's Enhanced Reflexes. Ms Marvel never actually had an Endurance in play, but the player (Boggs, I think) mentioned it by name a couple of times when using its resource to pay for something else.

Some duplicates are going to be useful though, aren’t they. Make the Call, for instance, it’s a clutch card for Leadership. If you want to run double leadership, then it’s great to have it available for both heroes.

Absolutely, and also The Power of ... cards. However, I think that 7 copies of a 1/deck card is getting to be a bit many...

Yeaaah I mean I wanna try a 6-player game considering that’s the size of my D&D group that I usually play board games with—so a couple extra generic resources is actually great. But if they come in every single Hero pack... it’s gonna start feeling like a bit much 🤷‍♂️

Here’s Zemo’s side scheme. He also has 2 copies of Hydra Soldier, which are identical to the ones in Legions of a Hydra. I think his last card is a Treachery called ‘Hail Hydra’ which makes all Hydra minions Attack, or if nothing attack’s, it searches for a Hydra Minion to put into play.

Ditto that, its a fair bet that every single deck from here until the sun burns out is going to contain: Genius, Energy, Strength, 2x Power of [Aspect Name Here].

Because they have to be playable out of the pack without any tinkering, and having a full set of resource cards is effectively mandatory for that to be true.

I didn’t realize that Lockjaw was a neutral hero until they showed it and the Quinjet at the very end of the stream.

I’m so excited for both of those cards; being able to turn 1 resource into X, in X turns is a phenomenally powerful ability, and Lockjaw would be perfect for any hero with low DEF.

I wouldn’t be too surprised to get paired resources eventually? An Energy/Physical, Physical/Mental, Mental/Energy? Idk if they’d wanna limit those a bit more, maybe, but there is some room for creative resources that could potentially replace those in some character packs

I hope they don't just reprint those cards everytime. That's so unambitious of them to not find other solutions for economy. What a waste of deck space (Especially considering theres a pretty hard cap on how many dupes of those cards will be useful to someone with a full collection). In other LCGs we have tons of creative ways to get resources and card draw and that's part of the fun of customizing the deck. I hope the reprints are more along the times of "this deck needs hero recursion so this time we throw in Make the Call" or "this deck really wants more readying so we throw in Indomitable". I'll even accept "this card has cool art of Captain America so we'll throw it in his deck because it looks more thematic".

I just don't get some of those. Hawkeye is good, but why on earth does he need to be reprinted? Same thing for make the call.

That seems to be 100% the case.

Yeah and (hear me out) if you got two Core sets, and two Cap packs, and two Ms Marvel packs for Lockjaw...

You would be able to play two Leadership heroes with 10 Allies in each of their decks (~1/4 of their deck) and 6 copies of Make the Call in the game :D

This LCG is attempting to break the mold a little. The premade decks are designed to be playable right out of the box. They may need a bit of adjustment for expert. I believe you can just buy the packs you want. No need to collect it all.

Previous LCG’s biggest problem was the good cards were scattered among many different packs and getting into an existing LCG can be daunting. This is their attempt to overcome that problem.

so you are good to just pick up Thor. But you’ll need to get some villains to play against though, or find a group of players that do.
