Red Die Plinking

By ianediger, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Onager Testbed (96)
• Gunnery Chief Varnillian (6)

ISD Cymoon 1 Refit (112)

• Quad Battery Turrets (5)
• Linked Turbolaser Towers (7)

= 61 Points

Squadrons:
= 0 Points

Total Points: 390

Obvious problems:

No squads (duh)

Onager is relying solely on Varnillian and IF! for red die consistency

Cymoon is relying on IF! and LTT for red die consistency

Cardinal sin for no GT on the ISD or Onager, and no Defensive Retrofit on the ISD

~~~~~~~~~~
Still kind of iffy on the TRC-quitens, original build had two DCap/SW7 Raider IIs; still not sure which would be better.
Also not sure where to cut to either pick up a small squad screen, or better dice control for the red slingers.
There's 13 points locked up in IF! and Vanto, and swapping the Arqs for the Raiders saves another 10, but then I'd lose the consistency from IF!, but the Raiders would probably be more consistent.
Slightly better, probably more consistent, and now featuring a small squad screen.
swap GCV for OE, Use Vet Gunners if you get crap red results, use OE to fix the black after. Pretty consistent.
I think GCV will see better use on a SHCBT variant to increase crit fishing multiple crits with TRC and WBT.
Granted, but with my luck, the vet gunners would also roll all blanks, so GCV is there just to make sure I get some damage from the ignition attack.
Arquitens with just LTT do really fine
Let's see... If I swap the Raiders for LTT Arqs, that puts me over, drop a squad, flip EHB for BC, and swap Woldar for Flight Commander, I can upgrade the Phantoms to Defenders.
A few things:
- I'd take Ordinance Experts black die rerolls over Varnillian.
- I think Intel Officer is the best with the OP Cannon since you don't have the ability to pressure tokens at such extreme ranges. You'll do much more damage if you manage to shoot off the evades and braces for your Arquitens and black dice.
Have you thought about using FCT Command Arquitens and to fling Zetrik Storm + a bunch of Bombers on a suicide run? You can take Demolisher instead of a Victory I pretending to be demo too.
On a related note:
Has anyone done the math on Varni vs Weapon Techs? Intuitively it makes more sense to use Varni since that makes VG a much better reroll.
Well, the Vic I was an area denial/carrier hybrid, not a Demo stand in, however, since y'all keep shouting OE at me, I spaced Varnillian and Rakehell, and added OE. Also, dropping the Defenders back down to Phantoms allowed me to change from the puny Battle Carrier Victory to the Chad Mini-ISD Victory. I toyed around with making room for the Harrow title, but 3 points just for the extra maneuverability is a bit much for me. I'd have to change the Vic to a tank build, and then that just begs for a Interdoctor or a support Glad feeding it shields, and there's no way I can fit a Tank Vic, Interdoctor, and an Onager in the same list.
Onager Testbed (96)
• General Romodi (20)
• Skilled First Officer (1)
• Veteran Gunners (5)
• Ordnance Experts (4)
• Orbital Bombardment Particle Cannons (5)
= 131 Points
Victory II (85)
• Skilled First Officer (1)
• Gunnery Team (7)
• Disposable Capacitors (3)
• Quad Battery Turrets (5)
• Leading Shots (4)
= 105 Points
Arquitens Light Cruiser (54)
• Linked Turbolaser Towers (7)
= 61 Points
Squadrons:
• 3 x TIE Phantom Squadron (42)
= 42 Points
Total Points: 400
Edit: That's not to say a Tank Vic won't fit, it will, but it sacrifices more firepower than I'm willing to part with, all for two extra shields.
Victory II (85)
• Minister Tua (2)
• Quad Battery Turrets (5)
• Harrow (3)
• Auxiliary Shields Team (3)
• Electronic Countermeasures (7)
= 105 Points
Oh, I see. Have you thought about using Warlord, the super flak boat?
Quote
Victory I (73)
• Agent Kallus (3)
• Ordnance Experts (4)
• Boosted Comms (4)
• H9 Turbolasers (8)
• Ordnance Pods (3)
• Warlord (8)
= 103 Points
Ordnance pods can be swapped out for external racks but this gives you a real carrier excellent flak coverage for your small fighter screen. It can upgrade a non-blank red die to double hit too to give it some reliable long range plink.
I did think about Super-Flak, but I decided to stick with Mini-ISD to help put even more pressure on defense tokens.
Resurrecting my own thread for a two steps forward one step eh kind of thought.
Assuming a Cataclysm Onager with OBPCs, deployed as far forward as possible can hit a Surprise Attack flagship deployed as far back as possible and held at Speed 0 by a G7x Interdictor, I might have something, plus objectives.
Name: Romodi's Trick Shots
Faction: Imperial
Commander: General Romodi
Assault: Suprise Attack
Defense: Rift Ambush
Navigation: Hyperspace Migration
Onager Testbed (96)
• General Romodi (20)
• Strategic Adviser (4)
• Ordnance Experts (4)
• Veteran Gunners (5)
• Orbital Bombardment Particle Cannons (5)
• Cataclysm (5)
= 139 Points
Interdictor Suppression Refit (90)
• Hondo Ohnaka (2)
• Disposable Capacitors (3)
• Grav Shift Reroute (2)
• G7-X Grav Well Projector (2)
• SW-7 Ion Batteries (5)
= 104 Points
Arquitens Light Cruiser (54)
• Expert Shield Tech (5)
• Dual Turbolaser Turrets (5)
• Hand of Justice (4)
= 68 Points
Raider II (48)
• Captain Brunson (5)
• Weapons Battery Techs (5)
• Disposable Capacitors (3)
• Heavy Ion Emplacements (9)
• Corvus (2)
= 72 Points
Squadrons:
• 2 x TIE Fighter Squadron (16)
= 16 Points
Total Points: 399
It obviously relies on getting obstructed shots to help supercharge the attacks. Onager does Onager things, the Interdictor helps set up obstacle obstruction with Grav Shift Reroute, and the Arq and Raider go flanking and sniping. Originally the Arq was a Krennic-Slaved Turrets sniper, and is probably better than what I have there now, but I don't own the SSD, so I don't have Krennic.
Also not totally sold on the Interdictor. Not sure if using it to hold ships at speed 0 for Onager snipes is any better than the Mini-ISD Victory.
