Rogue Trader, Coast to Coast via Skype/iChat/Anything

By GalaxyUC, in Rogue Trader

Hello Out There,

Myself and a friend are on two different ends of the country. I'm in Chicago and he's in Portland. We are very interested in playing this game, but are never in the same place since we moved apart. We're a couple of 30 year old gamers looking for a game and have been interested in playing a game via video chat sessions. Has anyone out there been doing this? More importantly, is anyone interested in GM'ING like this??!! We would prefer to be PC's and hopefully someone out there has all ready been playing with this concept.

If you're GM'ING and looking for players, let us/me know! If you're interested in trying to GM this way, TOTALLY LET ME KNOW! We are very eager to get an online game going and could probably do twice a month, but we are flexible.

Lastly, if anyone out there has been trying this all ready but it was not successful, please let me know what the shortcomings were. Thanks everyone for your time!

Our gaming group is currently playing long-distance via video chat. We tried out several options - our first attempt was with Skype, and we found it both unstable with more than 2 participants, and horrible in terms of audio quality. After trying a couple more options we settled on TokBox, which none of us had heard of but is working out quite well. It occasionally drops participants (some of us have unstable connections), but does so without crashing, and if your connection slows the video may pause but the audio tends to remain clear.

We've combined it with MapTool for our D&D game, but for RT we're just using a spare webcam pointed at the gaming table and good old fashioned minis - a low-tech solution, but perfectly functional. Unfortunately our group is full so I can't help you there, but I wish you the best of luck!

from france

never tried but it my be interesting. however coast to coast may be possible but across ocean i don't think it s possible.

Yeah, I'm running a game in the UK at the moment. Unfortunately I've only got two players. Shame you're not both on this end of the pond!

I'm in germany and would like trying to participate in that uk game (if you really search for participants)

I tried playing irc style with a group (different setting and rules no DH/RT) and the group really was to big for a textbased game and it went down after 3 sessions

then I tried GM-ing a game again textbased with various tools... we tried wave (sucked... to usntable and laggy) several dice bots (all good) 2 different map bots (which were nearly unusable first but improved greatly over the time) I have yet to try map tool and videochat

but all in all text based games are sloooooow and you should keep your group small, then try to find a system that is stable... (1 or 2 disconnects per session may be ok but every ~30mins is just unenjoyable)

Well, we run Sunday nights, 6.30 - 10.00pm GMT. We use Skype and if you can make it then you are more than welcome. I'm currently running the players through a modified Dark Frontier session following the almost total annihilation of their ship 'The Bismarck'. The Seneschal, Xanatov, claimed the warrant of trade after executing the previous Rogue Trader (a former PC) for incompetence and heresy. The PC's have just hit Rank 3. If you' like to play, send me an PM and we'll set something up. Cheers!

Hi GalaxyUC,

I am running a group of 3 full timers & part timer for a Rogue Trader Campaign. We just started with four sessions in play. The campaign overview is at http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/of-war-profit. We are using the new version of iTableTop (version 2) which is web browser based (multi-platform... IE, FF, and Safari), includes video streaming and voip; FYI we are using TeamSpeak 3 due to some echo. I have 11 floating licenses so no need for anything other than a browser and headset; three of the five of us have video cameras so that's optional. Its still in early beta but overall very stable and very sweet program with a lot of promise.

With the exception of my nephew our group is 30+ and I am the old fart in the bunch. We are also all coming up to speed on the rules.

Just an FYI, I am going to scale back the campaign focus a bit. I have currently an interwoven Rogue Trader and Dark Heresy bent with the group leading a small crusade (fleet + guardsmen). With a group all new to the rules and setting (though I am intimately familiar with the fluff), its a bit much. The focus is going to be a Rogue Trader with a Crusade Warrant of Trade who has to bring into the Imperial fold 5 additional worlds within a period of time or the Warrant is forfeit. So portal will be a bit out of synch for a week or two till I can clean it up to match the current narrowing of the campaign. The current group has one Cruiser but may have another if they can swing a current salvage endeavor. We currently have a Rogue Trader, Arch-Militant, Navigator (who doubles as pilot), and Missionary.

I have been running games using FantasyGrounds, Klooge, BRPG, and now iTableTop for quite some time... it cannot beat tabletop play but when your friends are scattered all over it does the job fairly nicely. Three of us are in the VAPA region, one in TX, and one in CA. We play Friday nights from 9pm EST till 1 or 2am.

Let me know if you are interested!

Hi everyone,

I am from France and i am currently running a game using Skype and Rolistik (French open source application to play pen and paper RPG online) and it work quite well. But Skype is quite unstable with 6 people online (audio only of course...). We are thinking of using something else for the audio (maybe Mumble). If anyone is interested PM me (I am a French GM so i run my games in French, but i think i can play in English).

Hey, Sirion, not sure if you recieved it, but I sent you a PM last week regarding the game I'm running.
