Triple Onager Lists?

By Atromix, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

With the Onager article up, I'm wondering how running 3 of them in a list would go. I don't think it would be anything near competitive, but I reckon it might be fun to try. How would you guys run it?

Here is my (poor) attempt.

Assault: Surprise Attack

Defense : Fleet Ambush

Navigation: Superior Positions

Onager-Class Testbed (96)

  • Cataclysm (5)
  • Fire Control Team (2)
  • SCBT (7)

Onager-Class Testbed (96)

  • Admiral Screed (26)
  • Fire Control Team (2)
  • SCBT (7)

Onager-Class Testbed (96)

  • Sunder (10)
  • Fire Control Team (2)
  • SCBT (7)

Squadrons:

  • 5 x TIE Fighter (40)

Total Points: 396

Not sure if I would run superior positions with just 5 tie fighters, as they will most likely get blasted out of the sky before they can reach the enemies flanks, especially unsipported as the Onagers want to sit back and shoot from as far away as possible. Maybe even drop 1 tie and run 4 Interceptors, then swap the blue for somthing else.

Yeah, list building isn't exactly my forte... 😁 So it could definitely do with some tweaking. But I'd love to see how more... competent list builders take it on, see what other combinations could work.

Honestly if I was going to include an Onager into a list, it would be this build.

Onager-class Star Destroyer (110)
• Captain Needa (2)
• Gunnery Chief Varnillian (6)
• Weapons Battery Techs (5)
• Turbolaser Reroute Circuits (7)
• Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolaser (7)
• Rakehell (4) or Cataclysm (5)
= 141 Points or 142 Points

swm33_onager-class-star-destroyer.png captain-needa.png swm33_gunnery-chief-varnillian.png weapons-battery-techs.png turbolaser-reroute-circuits.png swm33_superheavy-composite-beam-turbolasers.png swm33_rakehell.png or swm33_cataclysm.png will depend on how each one feels on tabletop.

Here is a best case scenario roll when using modifiers and if you have Admiral Screed in your list.
Red: 1DBL / 1CRIT / 1 BLNK
Blue: 1ACC / 1CRIT
Black: 1CRIT-HIT / 1BLNK

Confire a Blue or Red, dont matter.
TRC the Blank into a CRIT
If you have second player, Varnillian the DBL into a CRIT
WBT the Blue ACC into a CRIT
Screed Sac the Black BLNK to make the Confire Die into a CRIT

Congrats you now have 6 Red/Blue Crits with a Black CRIT-HIT.

The defender must choose a hull zone to suffer 6 damage, then they may spend defense tokens to reduce the remaining damage pool of 8. You can do more if you just natural roll most of it and not having to sac dice with Screed.

Other builds could be done with Fire-Control Team, Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolaser, Sunder and H9 Turbolasers, destroy the targets ECM, and lock out their brace for a big hit of damage.

Fire-Control Team, Superheavy Composite Beam Turbolaser and XX-9 Turbolasers, because you are fishing for crits anyway, why not crank up the amount of critical damage cards?

Fleet Ambush is a bad move. Your advantage is to shoot beyond long range, why reduce your opponent's path to jump onto your throat?

Solar Corona will be better than Superio Position. The same advantage, no disadvantage. With the narrow ignition arc must be impossible to loose accuracies unless you do it purposely.

Change those 5 ties that will do nothing for Ciena-Rudor or more interesting upgrades like good officers, other titles or upgrade some Onager to the Star Destroyer version and get an extra die to trigger your superweapons.

The defender may choose a new hull zone for each damage coming from the superweapon critical effect. It is not the defender suffer 1 damage per crit. It is the defender suffer 1 damage; resolve it once per crit. So technically they are multiple instances of suffer damage, not just once.

It is not a bad combo though.
