Jam: Jammer or Jammee chooses token?

By NielsD, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all, the rules are clear that the Jammer chooses whether someone removes a lock or a green token. To me it seems obvious that the person doing the jamming just picks the token they want to jam, and can choose any green or lock token. However there is ambiguity in the wording and some people interpret it to mean that if there are two green tokens (or two locks), then the person getting jammed can pick which one. To be fair it might be for balance reasons and a bit like Vader crew (where you have a choice between two bad options). However it seems counter-intuitive to me - why give the recipient a choice in this and why complicate what seems like a straightforward game effect: eg “I jam your evade”.

Has this been clarified officially? Or is there an unofficial consensus in the community or amongst judges?

I’m very grateful for your advice.

My own interpretation is that the jammer chooses which token (including which among several green tokens) to remove.

IIRC, the "many-judges" group went with that interpretation.

The jammer chooses everything, including which specific tokens, though I'm not sure if this was ever clarified in the rules reference or in the rulings thread. I believe it is the consensus among most of the judges who run major events. The closest thing to an official source I know of is the ruling from the French system open, which was posted by FFGOP on Facebook:

The player whose effect caused the ship to gain the jam token chooses which token to remove, either a green token or breaking a lock, and also specify which green token is removed or which lock is broken.

I hadn't seen that one. That agrees with the ruling they gave during the Huge Ship live stream so I would consider it pretty well finalized.

I've never played it that way, but i guess 'the person resolving the effect' (ie the one whos effect caused it) is clear.

I've always played it as, the player causing it chooses the type, and the player being effected chooses which one from that type. *shrug*

Thanks guys, well that clears that up - very helpful!

ya, it's never been clarified officially. the consensus is that the jammer chooses everything, including flavour. it's important to state raspberry.

in essence, you're given the opportunity to represent an entity from another FFG game. just grab what ever token you like belonging to the ship you're jamming, or lock it has assigned to another object. also, you never have to return the token to the opponent. it's yours now.
