Does the GR-75 need fleet support option?

By drail14me, in X-Wing

I’m really loving how FFG is bringing elements of Armada into X-Wing.

Fot the huge ships, I was really looking forward to having the GR-75 as much more of a support ship like it is in Armada with the “Fleet Support” upgrade slot.

Wonder if we’ll ever get something similar to a Fleet Support slot? At least, I’m hoping for more Team upgrades that offer more support options to other huge ships.

I’d like to see this too. And not to derail, but it always seems weird to me when a small base ship like Roark can “support” a huge ship. I thought in the live stream they talked about prohibiting certain combos but I feel like I haven’t seen that implemented. Maybe that’s in the new squad building app...

I think there is quite a lot to play around with Comms Team, Adaptive Shields, Toryn Farr, Jan Dodonna, perhaps even Raymus Antilles and the GR75 ability Resupply Craft. It could get out of hand if huge ships get more help. They are pretty beasty as is. In fact I would say they have purposely restricted range on some of these upgrades to make supporting another huge ship difficult.

You’re right it doesn’t look like they’ve addresses that ☹️

There's plenty of room to add such things

For now, I think it's mainly reflected in the double-cargo-by-default + ship ability

Not to mention the crew that it can access

Also, how does Roark support anyone? Who knows!? Flex your imagination, especially given that small groups of rebels on their tiny transports seem real good at snagging some *very* important Intel

Just the kind of thing you need to get a jump on the enemy

I just want a Slicer Team for AOE or multi-Jam shenanigans. Maybe if we ever get the IGV-55 Surveillance ship?

FYI: It appears that they at least tried to limit some of the small ship support, particularly the initiative-altering abilities. By giving huge ships an engagement value instead of an initiative value, upgrades that affect initiative shouldn't allow huge ships to fire earlier in combat.

Unfortunately, as discussed in another thread, the way the rules are written doesn't quite get that across in all cases. For example, Roark lets a friendly ship engage at initiative 7 instead of its standard initiative value. Well, huge ships don't actually engage at their standard initiative value, so at first blush, it doesn't have an effect. But the rules for huge ship engagement state:

"a huge ship engages during the Engagement Phase at the initiative of its engagement value instead."

Because they say, "initiative of its engagement value" it opens up this possibility that Roark might be able to let them engage at initiative 7 because he's not actually changing the friendly ship's initiative, he's just changing when they shoot during the engagement phase. Compare this to Swarm Tactics which reads, "At the start of the Engagement Phase, you may choose 1 friendly ship at range 1. If you do, that ship treats its initiative as equal to yours until the end of the round." This obviously does nothing to a huge ship because so what if its Initiative is changed - that's not referenced in the engagement phase at all.

Of course, it could also be argued that since Roark states "instead of its standard initiative value," and huge ships don't check initiative value during engagement, that Roark's ability doesn't affect huge ships (which I'm guessing is the correct interpretation, or else they wouldn't have gone through the effort of distinguishing initiative value and engagement value).
