Module Timeline

By Victarion13, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Roleplaying Game

Asking about the module released until now, can I ask what is the right timeline? (not the right order to play them).

Is this the right order?

  1. Winter embrace
  2. The scroll or the blade
  3. Topaz championship
  4. Palace of the Emerald Champion
  5. Slow Tide Harbor
  6. Wedding at Kyotei Castle
  7. Mask of the Oni
  8. Knotted Tails

Knotted Tails and The Scroll or the Blade fit 'inside' their respective parent adventures, so I'm not sure exactly how you'd denote that.

Winter's Embrace....is a matter of taste. Since it's written to be chronologically the Winter Court before Topaz Championship, but contestants at the Topaz Championship would logically be pre-gempukku children at that point; if you want to use the same characters then you need to move it after Topaz Championship, and ideally after Palace of the Emerald Champion (at which point they're Emerald Magistrates, and one of them is potentially the Topaz Champion, and hence their invitation to the Imperial Winter Court isn't especially weird).

Wedding at Kyotei Castle has no default 'timing' requirement other than it be after Doji Satsume has handed over the championate to his daughter (because Doji Kunuzobu is there on his wife's behalf), so you can play it anywhen, but again, if not using the bundled characters but using you own in a campaign, it needs to be after Topaz Championship.

If you want to use the adventure found in the Beta rules, it appears to happen chronologically before the others, but is aimed at higher rank characters, just to be confusing.

Any tips to play Winter’s Embrace after the events of the Topaz Championship?

Besides running all of the other adventures first so that the characters are not novices before you drop them at point Nemo in the middle of the ocean? Not much.

Not really. The big question is why the PCs have been invited, and by whom. Given the whole crane v mantis theme of the adventure, reintroducing Hitoshi, as totally-not-Kakita-Toshimoko's illegitemate son offers potentially interesting conflicts at Kyuden Doji.

If I wanted to play Mask of the Oni before Winter's Embrace, would I have to change a lot to make the timelines work? I've not yet purchased those ones, so I don't know all the details, but I like the idea of playing a Winter Court intrigue adventure after the players have been to the Shadowlands, and having their attempts at intrigue hindered by the lingering impact of the horrors witnessed in the Shadowlands.

Not really. Apart from the details of Winter's Embrace occurring before Topaz Championship (and Emerald Palace), there is really little reason why you cannot run Oni's Mask and Knotted Tails before the Winter Court adventure. Obviously Slow Tide Harbor occurs before Oni's Mask, but beyond that the three tied-set adventures could conceal be in any order. Kyotei Castle can occur at any point, though the power level of that one necessitates that it occurs late unless you make adjustments.

Below are the groupings and the order within said groupings:
Slow Tide->Oni's Mask/Knotted Tails
Topaz Championship->Emerald Palace
Winter's Embrace/Sword or the Blade
