Not into Legion.. but this may change.

I am an X-Wing player through and through; however, these official rules for a skirmish game may push me over to trying this format. Anything that helps my wallet has to be good!!

The rules seem pretty clean and easy to follow.

You totally should. The meta is wide open, 500pts is a blast to play, and if you just want to skirmish, the price point is low. Clone Wars core set will get you two decent 500 point armies.

I like it. I was hoping more for smaller, loser skirmish style similar to Kill Team, Mordheim, or Company of Iron, but this is a good start.

500 points plays very fast and is quite fun

That could be a good idea as well! Individual models doing individual things.

What's wrong with Imperial Assault for that?

My question is whether units with compulsory move like speeder bikes or Barc speeders would be viable on a three by three board. I mean, wouldn’t they just fly off if you aren't carful?

Maybe, but they would also cover ground ridiculously fast, probably traveling across the map in a single turn. I've always found them really easy to maneuver, even with lots of terrain so it might make them more fun to play.

Good point. Didn’t think of it that way.

Most speeders would struggle I think. They usually like deployments that allow them to flank and 3x3 would hamper that a bit

I doubt it. You can easily keep them relevant circling the field and cutting in for solid in-arc shots when you want. Adding a side car to the barc will help keep it in play with slower speed too.

I for one am super excited by this new format. I hope someone (ffg even) makes the new battle cards so we can play this like standard. My biggest problem playing Legion is that it’s such a long time commitment - I’ve spent 4-5 hours on a game before when you include setup and tear down. This feels like it’ll go much faster which means easier time finding an opponent to set up for.

I am also hoping it gets more people to be willing to try the game - a core set is now playable (depending on faction - I get some aren’t optimal at 500 with just core set).

A core set is not really playable in skirmish for all factions except Republic. You are missing between 50 and 100 points.

I was about to say empire, but then I remembered points updates. Doh. That’s why I could remember doing it before with friends when we were all new and cranking out painted minis ASAP.

Well, good to know the new skirmish rules are doing exactly what they intended. Hooking some of these X-wing folks! lol

@Chudley, you should definitely give it a try. Legion is an extremely satisfying game to play.

This is true and people should be aware of it. A single Commander or expansion should be all you need to bridge the gap though.

Yep. Skirmish is definitely a good start for new players and basically any unit will push the core set to 500 points. It can't be a commander though if you play the official skirmish rules since there are limited to one.

It's a dead game. It's not terrain friendly. It's scenarios are tile dependent.

I don't get to play a great deal of Legion, but I always thought that the 500pnt game was in the rule book and that it was the skirmish game. Now I can't find it anywhere and the learn to play guide doesn't mention it either.

Well yeah, it's dead because they stopped supporting it.

Only one commander in Skirmish. Operative or another expansion would work though.

Oh, right. Good point.

It is not dead, they stopped producing new physical content, but they just released new digital content within the last month with more in the works. But for skirmish (vs co-op) it is dead.

It never existed.

RIP

Best game FFG ever made (skirmish)

Considering my play group have been using Imperial Discipline’s 500 pt rules exclusively for a long while, this formalization of that rule set is welcomed by me. I personally feel the game is more fun at this level anyway, and far more tournament friendly in terms of time.
