Can someone fill me in on what happened/was announced during the stream?

New format to play. 500 points, half the board, and new cards we will be able to print out later today. Think they said it would be tournaments for it and everything. Sort of like how X-wing has hyperspace and extended.
Wonder how people will feel about this? Now we got 2 metas to build around and a lot of close range may be good now?

That's great for the clone wars! Now Rex and B2's will be more competitive!

It feels like Rebels, CIS, and GAR players will want to stick to 500 points to stay away from Empire range 4 shooting list. Will be interested to see how the game feels/plays at 500. Or if FFG will try to support both modes equally.
What's a good vendor to print these new Battle Cards?
Yeah, FFG had to go this route just for tournaments. The space and time needed for standard play was a logistical nightmare for running tournaments. Even just for league nights that is a lot of tables and space needed and not all game stores can handle that.

Just to clarify, they did state that this is an optional format, and that premier events will still be 800 points.
After this, will the imperial discipline 500-points format still be relevant? I liked it very much, but with 2 different 500-points formats it will be a little redundant.

I've already updated my website to point to theirs. I'm flattered, but I would encourage everyone to utilize the official format

So is this their attempt to aim for the more casual fans and local stores by offering a legit small, quick game? And then once they are hooked people have to move up into the 800 point format. Sort of like a reverse epic for X-wing or Armada.
Or will it be around an equal footing with 800 points and FFG will try to keep units balanced in this mode? Like Fleet troopers sort of suck in 800 point games, but that is because they work at only 500 points. Or B2s do not look as good as B1s in large games, but they are made to be played mainly in 500 point games?
With X-wing most people play extended, but iirc the highest tournaments all run hyperspace format. I guess the player base will decide on how good this new mode is and if it follows a similar pattern.

We still credit you with coming up with the format and for getting it to become an official format, apparently FFG liked your idea.

I am sure there is interest in both formats, maybe not physical space, but interest.
I am far more interested in the Skirmish game.

Agreed, I decided to get into the game last week with an eye to playing the unofficial 500 point format almost exclusively, now that its an official format it wont be so hard to find 500 point games.

Definitely. I just wanted to make sure people were aware that this might not get the tournament attention some might expect.
I'll admit, I'm incredibly disappointed with this. I've tried a few 500 point games (mostly for demo or trial games) but can't say I really care for them. Having an "official" format is like having an "official" set of training wheels, whoopty do. Congrats to those of you that like the format, but it's not for me.
I'm far more interested in the new Battle Cards than the format, which probably adds to the disappointment. The new cards look cool, and the actual, regular, 800 point format really needs more battle cards, for both casual and competitive play, but instead, that support goes to a casual format and can't be applied to regular play.

I love this skirmish format, 800 is great too, but its hard on time and space. Options are always good.

More battle cards for the standard format would be amazing, but the skirmish battle cards are basically just modifications of the standard battle cards, with a couple exceptions. So I don't feel like they took a ton of resources to develop.

Some of them are, but there are about 2 per category that could be interesting. Elimination by itself just seems amazing, as it would simultaneously offer buffs to vehicles and low-activation count armies, while hurting units like strike teams. It's something I've seen people ask for, for nearly a year now, and it's been added to a subformat, and not the main game. Besides that, Control, War Weary, Improvised Defenses, and Face off are all different and I would love to see them in 800 point games.
