Every time we've seen this scenario play out on the screen in a Star Wars movie, 100% of the time it ends with the lone snubfighter destroying every single surface battery on the star destroyer as the pilot makes "your momma" jokes.
There's literally no reason to think a lowly imperial gunner is gonna actually score a hit here.

Or Kylo Ren’s new lightsaber.
I'm glad I'm not the only person this poster irritated. The idea of simultaneously viewing yourselves as the underdog while having won the last series blows my mind (rebels in modern times after having "won" the battle of endor and the battle of jakku)
IMO it would have been cooler to see the fall of the New Republic should they have wanted to get back to the underdog story.

Well, I think it's because the New Republic didn't associate itself with the resistance (at least not out in the open). Just the opposite from what I understand. The NR didn't consider themselves the underdogs, they thought they had won.
The resistance
became
the underdogs after the First Order vaporized the entire centralized government, the majority of their military, and ambushed the remaining resistance forces while they evacuated.
Was there a tone of "underdog" before the New Republic was destroyed? As far as I could tell the TFA didn't really address the New Republic until Hux had his little murder speech. It was all about Luke disappearing.

I generally like Force Awakens, i give it WAY more credit than Last Jedi, but man i can't stand Star Killer base and this nonsense. There are countless ways they could have done this, I think they might have picked the worst.
*I still enjoy the trench scene fine and the moment Rey force grips the lightsaber still brings a small tear to my eye(such good music)*

It's JJ Abrams. Everything he does has to be bigger and better. Just wait for Rise of Skywalker..... Also I hate the Mary Sue that is Rey.

yeah, Starkiller base was stupid, and if they were determined to use it, they should have at least made it last more than one movie, a threat like that hanging over them for more than one film would have made the FO actually seem dangerous, but they have instead been portrayed as completely inept, they only decimated the resistance by the resistance being slightly more inept...
What's never made sense to me is that the New Republic are aware of the rise of the First Order so why mess about using a Resistance with political deniability? Why would they not just send in the New Republic's army and fleet to destroy the First Order before they became too powerful?
Instead they are depicted as passive victims with a military that does nothing. I assume that it does exist in the film and it's destroyed in the attack by Star Killer base though I can't recall if it's ever specifically mentioned.
I think the the new films are dreadful if I'm honest. So many plot holes. Why do the New Republic's armed forces just allow the First Order to grow without doing anything about it? Why is Rey good at absolutely everything? Why doesn't Admiral Holdo simply tell Poe the escape plan? There's no reason for secrecy, he's on her side!! Leia survives a massive explosion, gets blown into space and flies around like Mary Poppins and she's still alive?!? Ludicrous.
The Force Awakens is pretty much a repeat of the same film that my mum took me to see in early 1977. Oh look.... Plucky Rebels have to attack a giant sized space weapon with small fighters....again! Is this the best they could come up with? Really??
I'm perfectly happy with Armada being Imperials vs Rebels and have very little interest in The Clone Wars but if FFG do expand it I hope they go back in time in the Clones direction rather than forward to the PC dullness and illogic that is the new trilogy.

Lesse, I got Rey good at everything, complaining about female characters, PC dullness.... yup, BINGO! I got Bingo right here!

This really rubs me the wrong way. You know what, I agree with @Bolshevik6 . There are a lot of problems with the female characters especially in TLJ. Holdo wearing that ridiculous outfit instead of a military uniform. Holdo sacrificing herself instead of Ackbar. Lea surviving that explosion. The whole character of rose. (Or for some people Ray being to powerful). All of those are problems with female characters but have nothing to do with them being female but you often get lumped together with and being called "anti women" and it infuriates me to no end. It is just some trump "argument" to counter any criticism somebody has with the new films without even engaging with what people have to say. But this couldn't even be further from the truth. I have no problems with female characters in star wars. I love Ciena Ree from lost stars. I love Dr Aphra. I think Admiral Rae Sloane is awesome. Hera is on of my most loved characters from rebels. Personally I even like Ray. She might be my favourite character in the sequel movies. But that doesn't change the fakt that so many aspect of the female characters (or surrounding the female characters) in TLJ are an absolute train wreck. And one can have that opinion without being anti women.

I didn't complain about "female characters". I complained about Rey being good at everything; ace pilot, great swordswoman and good with the Force. Leia is ridiculous IMO and I stand by what I said, what possible reason could Holdo have for not telling Poe the plan? Those plot holes all happened to have female characters at the centre of them. Don't blame me, blame the screenwriters.
Is it PC? Depends on what your view of political correctness is. Are many of the heroes women and non-white? Yes but not all. Are many of the villains white men? Yes but not all. Personally I think it is a bit politically correct but I could live with that if the movies didn't have plot holes you could drive a train through and the first wasn't just a repeat of what we got in 1977. I'm a bit more critical at the age of 54 then I was at the age of nearly 12.
If the films have "bingo cards" there's probably a very good reason for that. The new films get a free pass for a lot of silliness and bad writing because it's Star Wars.

Well think about the situation a little. The leadership had decided that they are being tracked through hyperspace but they didn't really know how. Their first guess is an expensive state of the art device thought to be impossible, but the much more likely cause was that there's a mole on board who transmitted the coordinates. When espionage is plausible, the lock down of information is 100% necessary.
Ironically, Poe figuring out the plan is what caused the deaths of most of the people on the transports. Had Poe not been talking about ship positions over unsecured channels, IE to Finn Rose and DJ, the rebels would have escaped with barely a hair tussled.
Holdo had no way of knowing how they were tracked. Cover all your bases. If there's a possibility of a mole, compartmentalize information.
An interesting point but I think at some stage you have to trust your senior officers. Otherwise it makes executing the plan almost impossible.
If the information was indeed on lockdown she could simply have told him that and explained the reasons why. I don't recall anywhere in the film that she actually chose to do that.
