New player trying to build a CIS Army

By Mace Windu, in Army Building

So I'm a long time X-Wing player with a soft spot for CIS so when they released them for Legion I finally gave in and decided to buy in.

My collection is limited to 2 core sets worth of CIS as well as a Dooku to play with.

Here is my first cut at building a list, my instincts tell me that I'm overloading the commanders but I'm not really up to speed with all the card interactions and combos that I should be building or whether these commanders are more efficient with fewer upgrades..

General Grievous (175 + 33 = 208)

--Aggressive Tactics (10), Strict Orders (5), Endurance (6), DT-57 Annihilator (12)

Count Dooku (205 + 30 = 235)

--Force Reflexes (10), Force Choke (5), Force Guidance (10), Strict Orders (5)

B1 Battle Droids (36 + 28 = 64)

--E-5C B1 Trooper (18), HQ Uplink (10)

B1 Battle Droids (36 + 28 = 64)

--E-5C B1 Trooper (18), HQ Uplink (10)

B1 Battle Droids (36 + 24 = 60)

--E-5C B1 Trooper (18), B1 Battle Droid (6)

B1 Battle Droids (36 + 24 = 60)

--E-5C B1 Trooper (18), B1 Battle Droid (6)

Droidekas (100 + 5 = 105)

--Linked Targeting Array (5)

796 Points

Any advice or suggested changes would be greatly appreciated. Honestly can't wait till the AAT comes out, regardless of whether its good or not it just looks to awesome not to put on the table.

One thing you can definitely change: you only need 1 copy of Strict Orders, as it works regardless of range or where the order comes from. You could easily replace the one on Dooku with Esteemed Leader to help protect him.

As for the rest, with what you own, you don't have a lot of options to change anything. I would recommend replacing the E-5C on the HQ Uplink units with the E-60R, since they will want to be recovering anyway. I would also recommend moving the extra B1 troopers to the HQ Uplink units to help keep them alive. Other than that, I would recommend picking up 2 more B1 units, as I think it will be a long, long time before we even have the potential to get a uni that might be able to replace them (B2s are too expensive for that in my opinion).

Thanks for the advice, I did think that maybe having the second strict orders was useful as if one commander goes down early then the effect is still in play, but as you say Esteemed leader could be much more useful at keeping Dooku alive longer, and it certainly seems the longer Dooku lives the more likely you are to win.

I did wonder about upping 2 of the E-5C's to E-60R's though I wasn't sure if loosing the bid was worth it in legion? also not sure what the stats are like on that Single black to red attack die change vs the range variance and the fact you typically wont be able to attack with the E-60R every turn vs the E-5C shooting every turn.

Should I assume that probably needing the Impact effect is worth it? I assume that would be a meta call depending on how many armoured units see play?

Bids in Legion aren't really a big deal (since they fixed Key Positions, anyway). Personally, I, and many others, tend to prefer red player since it has its own advantages. As for the difference in attack stats, a red die rolls .25 more hits on average than a black die (6/8 vs 4/8 without converting surges), so it is slightly more reliable than the E-5C. Having to Recover to use the E-60R again is definitely a downside, but with HQ Uplink you'll be recovering sometimes anyway, and it also has range 4, which can be nice if you need it. Impact isn't super necessary, since Armor isn't extremely popular, but yeah, that can vary depending on your local meta. Once the upgrade pack comes out next month, I do think the E-5s for the same points is pretty much a flat-out better option (it has fewer and worse dice, but it doesn't exhaust and Critical 1 makes your whole attack pool better since it can be used on any die).

Impact X can be used on any dice in the pool as well.

Yes, but that only matters against Armor, whereas Critical improves your damage against everything (assuming you roll at least 1 Surge).

Sure, but what you wrote seemed to indicate you didn't know you could use Impact with any die and I wanted to make sure.
