Personally I think the Onager will be a soft counter to red dice defense fleets, as it can sit outside of red range and toss black dice. Now how effective it will be outside of that niche is yet to be seen.
Onager Live Stream Info
I have never been so excited for a Monday. I can't wait to see what the other version of this ship is.
I think it will hit inderdictor tank fleets the hardest. Somehow I doubt those bemoaning the onset of the onager are primarily concerned about the interdictor prospects.

Just give the Interdictor a Superweapon

I mean, you can think of the experimental retrofits as defensive/manipulation superweapons. Since the live stream I've been referring to the onager as an interdictor like boat. Poorly kitted, marginally protected, bulky support ships. The interdictor focused on defense and objectives, the onager focused on long range offensive support

Sure ain't. Sticking it out in the back and not fighting has a natural counter now, and I'm very happy about that
Sitting at the back not fighting, now countered by sitting at the back fighting. We don't know what the other weapon does, and I expect the 2nd variant to be much more expensive but based on what we know, I don't think it is going to change the meta as much as require different tactics and I rate it very much as a support ship the rest of the fleet are going to be doing most of the damage this might force your opponents hand.
Fleets that are built around not engaging or engaging late are most effected, don't see many of these.
Squad heavy the carriers risk taking more damage as they try to hang back, but they are very easily going to be able to overwhelm the Onagar.
Two ship list can probably weather the few extra hits then close and destroy the Onagar with easy so will depend on the rest of the fleet.
MSU will dodge that arc with ease and laugh as they flank those squishy sides.
So I think you would want the rest of the fleet to build around making your opponts life hard if they close with the Ongar quickly, Demo or Kuat? decent squad screen? I have a feeling you are going to have compromises.
Liking the ship. Can see it making a mess out of large ship fleets with the SSD and Star Hawk running around she does seem to hard counter them. MSU definitely not so much and actually might breath some life into that style of fleet. I can't wait to try it, like the Interdictor this is going to be a tough ship to fly well.
What I find interesting about the Onager and the Starhawk is that it's almost like FFG is daring us to use Speed 0 for the first time (in the Onager's case, so that it can pivot on its axis and use its long-range cannon; in the Starhawk's case, so that it can tractor opponents down to a point where they can't spend their defense tokens). I think both ships have the potential of really shaking up game play.

It's a few years ago now, but in the SF bay area Mythics was crushing tournaments with his Yavaris speed 0 activation padding shenanigans. Speed 0 tanking is nothing new.
Now if only the Onager had come out way back then... forcing static lists to move.

... with a speed 0 ship 😁
I'm looking forward to see a battle between an Onager vs Onager camping fleet.

Should make for some epic Sector Fleet battles

And if another Onager sets up on the opposite side of the table do you think both would want to stay at speed 0?

One of the reasons I've very interested in the other superweapons and titles. They might be better on the move.
That ~100pt cost is music to my ears; means 1 of these flanked by a pair of interdictors should fit quite nicely in the 400 pt range
Sounds like it can perform ignition attacks without equipping a super weapon.
The more expensive Onager trades the Support Teams slot for a Turbolaser slot:
Meaning XI7 Onagers are a thing.
Cataclysm means ignition attack on turn 1. The Onager, Interdictor Surprise Attack combo is real!
And Sunder lets you remove ECMs from an enemy!
This is amazing 😭 (tears of joy)
Strip ECMs, get an Acc from Gunnery Chief Varnillian vs brace and circumvent redirect with XI7.
