My first (small) Tournament Experience

By RedDogReb, in Star Wars: Armada Battle Reports

On Saturday, I went to a small tournament at the Dice Saloon, Brighton.

10 players, three games.

Had a great day, played three good games. Goal for the day, win at least one game and not embarrass myself with my flying.

I took my current favourite list, Up Close and Personal:

ISD Kuat, Admiral Screed, Darth Vader Boarding troopers, APT, Leading Shots, Strategic Advisor, ECM // GSD1, Captain Brunson, Ord Experts, Engine Techs, APT, Demolisher // GSD1, Intel Officer, Ord Experts, Engine Techs, APT, Insidious // Gozanti, Comms Net, // Gozanti, Comms Net. Total 382 points.

First game was against a Sloane generic squadrons list. I was first player. I can’t remember the objective.

As my list is all about short range black dice, I flew aggressively. Pics are a bit out of order. First is his fleet. Third is about turn 3/4. His carrier didn’t last the turn! The middle pic is the start of the last turn of the game (not sure if it was 5 or 6). His Demolisher is flying from right to left, my Demolisher is just above it, and Insidious is the third GSD. I finished off his Demo with an Engine Techs ram from Insidious.

Somewhere around turn 3, I got his raider. Might have had a ram in somewhere, but effectively Demolished (I cant remember if it was double arc, or very good roll on just a side arc).

My oppo (nice guy called Alex) was unlucky on a number of his rolls, and I ended up with a 9-2 win having lost my ISD.

Second game, against another nice chap called James, was very close.

He had a pair of fully specced ISD2’s, and a pair of Gozanti. I again had the bid and went first. His Contested Outpost.

The Outpost was set up on my left, with the asteroids he placed closer to me. He put a Gozanti to farm points, the rest of his fleet castles on my far right. I deployed castles to my left.

My ISD stayed alive, and I sent a Gozanti and Insidious to get the station. Both of these destroyed his Gozanti (thanks to concentrated fire on mine and a lucky hit/accuracy roll after it had been rammed). So I could now get points. Unfortunately I mistimed one turn and missed being in range.

I got the ISD around his pair and although damaged, I had repair dials stacked so it survived.

Probably my biggest mistake of the day was in this game though. Not sure what it was, but I managed to fly Demolisher too close to his left most ISD, with predictable results. If I’d waited a turn, I could have last firsted and got away. That (and missing one turn of objective farming) cost me the game by 3 points! A 5-6 loss.

Last game was against a friend of mine, Tim. He was in first, and thanks to my big win earlier, I was third. And on top table! Not exactly winner takes all as the second placed player (Adam) could obviously win his and overtake Tim. Adam and Tim had played each other in Game 2, hence why they weren’t playing each other again.

Tim’s fleet was a kitted out ISD2, raider lifeboat for Sloane (with Corvus) a Gozanti and ace squadrons.

I again chose first player, and went for his gravity rift (?) objective.

Poorish deployment by me, had Demolisher and the ISD and Gozanti on my right, with Insidious and my other Gozanti on my left. These two were facing his ISD, Gozanti and Corvus after he had repositioned it.

However , flying aggressively again paid some dividends, his ISD suffered serious damage and some great crits from APTs, the last being the one that strips largest shield. As I’d got round his side, his front shield went from full strength to zero.

Although Insidious was eventually destroyed, it had done a good job.

Demo was moving in, and I was able to take a front arc shot, and then a side arc shot into the ISD.

I was hoping the side arc would destroy it. I rolled poorly, and decided to reroll all four black dice with Ordnance Experts. I got a great roll. Three hit/crits and a hit. His ISD was no more.

However, his squadron aces could position to attack him. It was death by a thousand cuts. Eventually Demo went down on turn 5/6. Unfortunately I just couldn’t get my ISD into the fight quick enough to destroy either the raider lifeboat or Gozanti, which would have given me the win.

Ended up losing by 10 points, another 5-6 defeat.

After all points were totalled, I ended up third!

Very happy with the day. A big win and two very close defeats.

Would be great, when you could add your fleet at the first post 😁 .
