Everyone Is Complaining About Epic Stuff

By Darth Meanie, in X-Wing

And I think that is so awesome.

People want to play Epic. And want it to be good.

Best. News. Ever.

Wonky bases. Odd dials. Less stands. Whatever.

Just slap a huge ship on the table and have a glorious night of X-wing. FFG will fix all the details when they see us all playing epic!!

I agree with all of this except for your final sentence - the official app is the elephant here.

I stopped using it after the 2nd update wiped all my saved Hyperspace lists for the 2nd time, but it really needs to cover huge ships and the epic game scenarios since that app is where rules updates supersede the printed rulebooks, and to confirm that the non-official apps have implemented the rules correctly.

@Darth Meanie social media is now the ultimate power in the universe! I suggest we use it.

As long as some brave souls volunteer and keep up Yasb2 and other squadbuilders, there is hope!

The other solution is hand calculating with the pdf in hand (after all in Huge ship battled you anyways want to keep the fighters lean and with very few upgrades! They die fast, and thus would mean many lost points, and also, having too many interactions on all the smalls slows the game down too much), it is doable - and a good brain exercise ;)

The app problem is already in the normal format, last time I used the official builder was somewhere fall 2019. It is just so bad....

There’s workarounds for the app. There’s no workaround for an epic ship base that literally falls apart if you touch it. It just doesn’t fit together : /

You're having problems I don't see. I've had no issues with the Epic Ship base. My only issue has been that the piece the forward peg slots into on the CR-90 it's self was loosely glued on, so I need to buy super glue and fix that.

The plastic and cardboard base don’t fit over each other so my pegs won’t lock in to the slot in the base. It’s not awesome.

For the CR-90 and Raider, you need to "stretch" the openings slightly with a knife, nail file, or similar. The holes are just too close together by a tiny amount. Don't worry if you mangle it a bit, the peg will cover it. Once they are seated properly the pegs stay in the base really well for me.

Again, problem I'm not seeing. My CR-90's base and base plates, and pegs all lined up properly. As do the base plates, base, and pegs that came with the conversion kit. And I've now gone through testing every single base plate with the 2nd base in the conversion kit. Which makes me wonder if it's a matter of people trying to use the pegs from 1st edition that's the issue.

My conversion kit bases, ship tokens, pegs and 1st ed ships all fit together very well. I can pick the assembled ship up by any part and it stays together nicely, yet it also comes apart properly without sticking.

Overall, I'm very pleased with them. Far better than the original bases!

Yea I was thinking about that. Can’t unpull that trigger though, so I was waiting.

Those are the only two I’ve played so it’s good to know it’s not all of them!

No

So, you're basically claiming that everyone who's bought the conversion kit and/or the CR-90 and is not experiencing problems with the base plate and pegs is imagining it? I've gone through and tested every base plate in my conversion kit, even though I don't even have most of the ships. And it all fit properly. It fit properly both with the pegs the conversion kit came with, and the ones my CR-90 came with. I don't doubt some people are experiencing problems. But I am beginning to wonder if the problems are more due to user error then manufacturing defect. There could be a manufacturing defect, of course. But if there is, claiming it's universal is rather silly.

No. I’m saying mine is bad and so are some others. I didn’t say it was universal.

Mine is not user error. The cardboard piece doesn’t land over the slots for the pegs. If you put it over one correct slot it is partially blocking the other.

Huh, would think that would be a more widespread problem. In fact, one would think it to be a universal issue if it's with the printing run. Sorry for the snark, but people have been claiming that anyone not having issues is delusional.

So, I just put one together (edit: GR-75). Mine is dang solid. Better than 1.0, even.

But it definitely only goes together ONE WAY. Is that why people are having problems??

Edit: The Raider is less perfect. Maybe only an issue with the Corvettes?? Still, it's not as bad as some have demonstrated.

Possibly. I noticed early on that the pegs only go in one way, so I paid attention to that. I also noticed early on that the plastic bases have an arrow to indicate the "front" of the base.

Same here. The smaller ships are fine, but the Corvette holes are a little too close. They can go in after finagling.

Maybe it's just less severe on my set.

And it still took 4 movies for it to even make a dent in how Disney handles the franchise. 😝 😄

They always had the arrow. The first edition would bases had a double chevroned arrow to indicate they accepted the epic flight stand. So does the cardboard for only in that direction too now? Haven't had a chance to pick up my *coughhackwheeze TWO wheezepant* conversion kits.

TFA — “Just a rehash! Should have just stuck with the Empire vs Rebels”

R1 — “Cool story but could you be more inventive?”

TLJ — “#notmystarwars”

Solo — “Yawwwwwn”

The Mandalorian — “ 😁 👍 👌

TRoS — TBD

They’ve always listened to feedback. We’re just hard to please (for good reason)

I have to agree: the game design parts all seem really good. We played a 500 point game on Thursday - an ordinary Thursday game night! The Huge ships worked well, and the Wings were a boon to moving lots of ships. My teammate, who had played all of 3 times before, flew a 6-TIE block around the table for the highest kill count in the game.

All the complaints people have? Those are business decisions and manufacturing problems. That's still troubling, but no matter what, at least we can console ourselves with the thought that the game is in a good place.

OT, but... How do you pick obstacles for epic lists? We’ve just been throwing 6 out there, but now I realize we don’t see any actual rules about it.

Hmmm. The fanbase had better decide whether they want Perfect SW or No SW.

My understanding is that the GoT guys backed out of making a trilogy because after the harsh criticism on the last season of GoT they decided life was too short to revisit that crap with SW fans.

It's not a reputation I want as a lover of all things SW.

Same as before, I'd say, unless you are playing a specific scenario that changes things up.

Although I'd say it's 6 per 3x3 play area ; if you are playing on 6x3, use 12 obstacles.

Oh I totally agree. I think the reaction to TLJ was excessive and nearly childish, but a degree of fastidiousness is to be expected from such an entrenched franchise. Personally I’m closer to the opinion that Disney is close to spot-on (more so the more Filoni is involved).

Still, like FFG with 2.0, it takes a minute for any company to find a happy medium with a new version of an entrenched property between stagnation and unfamiliarity. I think their iterative improvement is pretty remarkable.
