lando and cassian questions

By ONEone78, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello,

I did a quick search through the RR and here but didn't see any answers. A friend and I finally got around to playing our first game and I wasn't sure about the following.

1. Can Lando (rebel) target himself? Does he count as a friendly ship? It doesn't say other friendly ship.

2. With Cassian's crew ability, am I allowed to look at the maneuver dials on the squad builder? I assume not, but I can see how that would be really hard to know all the maneuvers available to each ship.

Thanks!

1. The Modified YT-1300 is at range 0 of it's self, so yes Lando (rebel) should be a valid target for his own ability.

2. Which is the point. I don't think your allowed to look up information on the ship's dial during the match. Feel free to study such information between matches. But during a match, I think you're expected to rely on memory and guesses.

  1. Lando : Since his card references "a friendly ship," and his ability works at Range 0, he may indeed choose himself!
  2. Cassian : This one is a little bit of a gray area. As players ARE allowed to reference official game documents and materials during the game, reviewing a ship's potential maneuvers in the official game app is TECHNICALLY allowable. However, doing so excessively can cause the game to slow down needlessly, which can put you in danger of being called for slow play. So yes, it's legal, but it can get you in trouble for other things.

A better solution for Cassian is to simply ask your opponent if you can review his dials before the game, or between planning phases, or to confirm that a ship has (or doesn't have) one of a few key maneuvers (do you have a hard-1 on that ship, or just hard-2? Your blue maneuvers are what, again? What speed are your S-Loops?). Few opponents will refuse to answer, as long as it's not excessive.

Also, reference images!

reviewing the dial before the game is a good option. also, opening up a reference of his dial on you phone or keeping a copy of the dial handy is allowed and a handy tool. as long as you don't spend too much time using cassian's ability, you're good. having a reference should help you make the guess faster, not make you spend more time.

asking your opponent which maneuvers is on a ships dial whenever you're guessing is not a good idea for several reasons. some opponents may think you looking for tells in how they answer - and since they've already set their dial, they cannot offer it to you for reference. this procedure would be time consuming. they could also refuse to answer. doing this every systems phase would certainly lead to less of a play experience for both players.

use a reference. it's perfectly legal to reference game material during a game. just my two cents.
