Republic Blue Squad

By Nesutizale, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I just bought the starter box, found the squad builder and thought I do some theorie crafting without knowing the game very well, just for fun. Still I would like to know...would this idea even work?
Basic idea was to build around the ARC as the Squad leader and the rest with characters from Blue Squad. No big names, except for Cody, a simple Clone army squad.

ARC-170 Starfighter - •“Wolffe” - 79
•“Wolffe” - CC-3636 (50)
Snap Shot (8)
GNK “Gonk” Droid (10)
R5 Astromech (4)
Shield Upgrade (4)
•Clone Commander Cody (3)

V-19 Torrent Starfighter - •“Tucker” - 35
•“Tucker” - Blue Five (29)
Cluster Missiles (5)
Munitions Failsafe (1)

V-19 Torrent Starfighter - •“Axe” - 45
•“Axe” - Blue Two (32)
Snap Shot (7)
Cluster Missiles (5)
Munitions Failsafe (1)

V-19 Torrent Starfighter - Blue Squadron Protector - 41
Blue Squadron Protector - (28)
Snap Shot (7)
Cluster Missiles (5)
Munitions Failsafe (1)

Total: 200/200

PS: If that would work, can I get single Torrent fighters? Only found them so far with the basic Republic set and buying a second set just for one fighter seams a bit like overspending.

I suppose you could make second hand deals for a single from another player though.

Gonk is basically an unplayable card. But what do I know? Give it a shot!

Why is Gonk unplayable? As far as I understand it you can use your action to give it back an energie, then use another action to restore a shield.
So in the first turn where you mostly have anothing to shoot at anyway you could charge him for later use. At least that is my theorie.

Do you have any other suggestion that might work better as a shield recharger or is shield recharging overrated because you don't have the time to recharge it anway?

He’s expensive. Both in points and opportunity.

Just the nature of the game is time on target and modded offense/defense.

But hey, give him a try. I hate it when people say “that’s no good.” But keep track of if it’s doing anything for you or not.

Pre-charging Gonk on turn 1 is an easy way to prime it for use once combat begins. Then it's one action to recover one shield. The problem is that after that it's unlikely that you can get another two actions after that to prepare and use it again without sacrificing enough combat effectiveness that you lose more than you gain from those actions. Basically, 2 actions for one shield regen is a bad trade on most ships most of the time. If you'd spent those actions focusing there's a pretty good chance that it would've saved you taking at least 1 damage in the first place. The exception is if you fully disengage, but depending on board state you may not be able to or it may weaken your position too much to have one ship not contributing.

That first use that you set up on turn 1 is a better deal, but even then, if that's the only regen you get from Gonk, then you've paid 10 points for a Shield Upgrade that you have to spend an action to apply after losing a shield first.

First off the torrents only come two to a pack with the Jedi fighter.

Gonk is a whole lot of points. Unlike the other stuff that gets your shields back though it does not cost an attack. But it costs your action and actions are dice mods (focus and target lock) and dice mods are really important. And overall even without Gonk you have a whole lot of points in Wolffe.

You also have a lot of points in the torrents and their job is more just to get in the way of your opponent. Their job is to get shot up. You want to be stingy with the points you spend on those kind of ships.

I would look at going with two gold squadron troopers for the torrents, trimming down Wolffe, and adding in a Jedi.

More like this building with only a Republic ARC and Guardians of the Republic.

Gonk is nice because he's regen without the pesky disarm token (which is why I NEVER play regen). But he does need to be a bit cheaper.

Brother, what is that brilliant evasion doing on Obi-Wan? his ability is a better brilliant evasion. And on a 7B? with only 2 green dice? Get rid of it and add heightend perception or where ever else you want to put those points.

I made the list just using the cards in the squadron pack and the ARC-170 expansion. It was the reduced evade dice that made me think making them count might be better plus the spare parts for help.

Sense is probably better instead of the spare parts and b. evasion. No objection to Heightened perception instead.
