pegs interchangeable between original and Second Edition?

By DeathStarEngineer, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I'm 3D modeling a new ship, and I'm getting close to wrapping it up. I need to model the peg hole for a large ship peg. I was hoping someone could share his/her knowledge of peg sizes...

At the moment I still only own original edition ships, not Second Edition ships, so I only have original pegs. Are the Second Edition small and large pegs the same size, i.e. interchangeable with first edition pegs? And just out of curiosity...are medium base pegs the same as large pegs, or some new shape & size?

Thanks!

The pegs are all the same size between editions.

The medium bases appear to have kept their peg size from whichever base they used in first edition. The Firespray is a large base peg but the arc was a small base. HOWEVER, if you have the option I would always just put the large peg on the medium base, then you don't need to worry about that conversion peg.

The best answer to all of this is to just use rotation magnets...

Yes, small and large remain the same between editions.

If the first edition ship was small base and went to medium you need one of the adapters from the conversion kit -- small base male peg to go into the ship model socket on one end with large female socket to go onto a large base male peg.

If the first edition was large and went to medium you do not need an adapter. The male peg on the medium base is the same as large bases.

I think but can't check that there are two different medium base adapters though. I have this idea the new Republic ARC-170 models have slightly different adapters than what is in conversion kit. Functionally the same but differently shaped. Like there is one adapter that tapers to the small end and one that is the same as a large just with a small male peg at one end.

I just remember moving medium base adapters around when I created the pluck-foam block I transport my Republic ARCs in. Or perhaps I simply gathered them all up and compared and inventoried them to a do-I-have-more-than-one-type-of-these things moment.

@Whalers on the moon @Frimmel thank you very much! That makes it easy, sounds like everything will work correctly if I work off of the dimensions of the original large peg I have. (Oh yeah I've seen photos of the magnet ball-and-socket mod, looks awesome, but I want to provide a simple peg hole in my model for those that want a simple, ready-to-go solution.) Thanks guys!

1st edition small and large pegs are the same as 2nd edition. Medium base is new to 2nd edition, and you get the conversion pegs(for ships that were small but became medium) in the conversion kits. Large ships that became medium still use the large pegs.

The best solution I have seen is to leave a round indentation in the bottom of the model to make a sort of socket.

3mm round x 1mm deep will accommodate a small ship flight peg (if you saw off the bottom part of a peg, you can glue it into that socket to mimic the way FFG ships work). For those who use magnets, 3mm x 1mm disc magnets are a common and popular choice. If you like imperial units, 1/8"x 1/16" is also a popular size, and will still fit a 3mm peg with a little wiggle room.

I don't know the dimensions for the other peg sizes, but the principle still holds.
