First stab at a Republic Army

By Glyph, in Army Building

Hey guys!

This Saturday I have my first game using GAR and I'd like your opinion on the list I'm planning on running:

Obi-Wan Kenobi - Force Reflexes, Aggressive Tactics

Phase I Clone Troopers - Z-6 Phase I Trooper, Phase I Clone Trooper, Targeting Scopes
Phase I Clone Troopers - Z-6 Phase I Trooper, Phase I Clone Trooper, Targeting Scopes
Phase I Clone Troopers
Phase I Clone Troopers
Phase I Clone Troopers
Phase I Clone Troopers

BARC Speeder - BARC RPS-6 Gunner, Long-Range Comlink
BARC Speeder - BARC RPS-6 Gunner, Long-Range Comlink

Commands : Ambush (1), Hello There! (1), Push (2), Knowledge and Defense (2), Assault (3), General Kenobi (3), Standing Orders (4)

Total : 799

The main idea behind this list is to have two cells each containing a big, shooty unit of clones with 2 supporting units, and Obi Wan in between them. The speeders can zoom off and hunt small units (like operatives and sniper) while popping shots off at other units or, if I'm facing armour, have them hunt these down.

You desperately need heavy weapons on your Clones, even if you need to drop a BARC. Everything about the BARCs underwhelms me anyway.

Drop targeting scopes and the fifth trooper, and probably a BARC. Give everyone a heavy weapon, either option is fine, and give Kenobi another upgrade or two. This build seems to maximize your weak link, the BARCs, at the expense of your strongest units (Clones and Obi).

Generally speaking, you don't want to split up your clones. That prevents token sharing as effectively, and allows one half of your force to get overwhelmed by the enemy. I've tried it a few times, and I almost always pay the price for it.

Figured I'd just add on to this thread since this is also my first stab at a Republic list. Keep in mind that my collection is 1x Core, 2x Phase 1 expansions, 1x BARC expansion, and Rex. I am not going to purchase additional Phase 1's or Core sets, so please save us both the time of replying with that type of answer.

2x stock BARC lis t:

797/800
Clone Captain Rex (Aggressive Tactics, Duck and Cover, Recon Intel)
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Force Reflexes, Hope, Strict Orders, Tenacity)
Phase I Clone Troopers (DC-15 Phase I Trooper)

I like this, and if I used my BARCs, I would use them with the Ion or RPS gun, because otherwise, Clones can't do a thing against armor. Armor isn't a rarity in our league, and we have a lot of Imperial players who like to play the AT-ST, or the Grav Tank. The Clones would be pretty screwed against them, or AT-RTs, from the Rebels.

Hey man...while I appreciate the reply this sort of post is kinda not-cool. There are some unspoken ettiquette rules when it comes to forums, one of which is to not hijack someone else's post. I'd appreciate it very much if you were to delete this and make your own thread in this Army Building forum.

People like you are what are wrong with the internet, people who think some common courtesy is something to point at and go "lol snowflake amirite. K like and subscribe lol thx"...then again, why am I surprised with a forum handle like lologrelol. End of the day, if you have nothing meaningful or constructive to add to a conversation, just keep your mouth shut...it makes all involved much happier. To use an analogy for why I was slightly put off by NeonWolf's post, If I'm invited to a party and interrupt someone's conversation to go on about what I'm doing and make the conversation about me then I'm pretty sure I'll get bad looks.

Now instead of just deleting this thread immediately, I'll leave it up so you can at least see this post and get in what I assume will be your profoundly wise and witty response, but I'll be deleting it in a couple of hours to repost a new thread with the same question, but with some comments about a list I tried out yesterday. If you have something constructive to lend to that conversation, by all means, reply there too. But if your intention is just to garner attention for yourself and to get a reaction from me, then don't bother...unless you want your post to be reported. Sh*tposting is best left on certain parts of the internet, not a place like the FFG forums...it's disrespectful to the hobbyists here, the moderators, and the company in general.

Dude, just chill. No one's trying to hijack your thread.

Neonwolf's post inherently was helpful to you, because it showed better list designs. Just take the advice he was getting into your own.

Give this list a crack:

I gave a very similar list a try the other day (see below). It was my first game of Legion in over a year, and my first with Republic so I goofed up quite a bit, like I forgot Aggressive tactics on my first two turns. I was playing against Empire and, thankfully, he had no Armoured units. The BARC lasted as quick as toiletpaper in a monsoon, killing only one Snowtrooper before evaporating instantly. Having more activations than me, he quickly ended up shooting my units to apply more and more suppression on each. By turn 2, all my units were only doing 1 action per turn. In turn 2, he used Vader's order that gives all units in range 1-2 3 suppression tokens. He managed to get 3 units, which failed to remove even a single suppression and ended up not being able to do anything except run away for the rest of the game. Suppression is too much of a weakness for Clones...something a measly Inspire 1 from Hope cannot help much with.

I'd recommend trying the ion + HQ uplink speeder.

Recon intel on clone squads is really good, if you can get more, I'd recommend it.

Try Strict Orders + hope on Obiwan.

Try to use the terrain to your advantage against numerical/longer ranged opponents. Keep out of LOS until you absolutely need to move forward. Or try to bait your opponent into coming around a corner into your LOS.

The ion will help against your opponent's vehicles (if that's the meta in your area).

Unfortunately clones just don't have many good options at the moment.

They are a very tough faction for newer players. As you really need to push token sharing/support fire to its max. Plus it's harder for newer players to overcome the drawback of having less activations.

Haven't had a chance to put the clones on the table yet, but should this weekend. I am going to go with the 2nd list I posted above.

It seems that Suppression could be an issue and that Hope isn't really sufficient to combat it using traditional (Rebel & Imperial) methods. Rex's 3-pip gives him Inspire 2 for a turn, which could help (and the recover on that card is why I gave him Duck & Cover in my list). Perhaps when the Phase I Upgrade pack drops the Phase I Clone Captain will become useful with the Training slot (can equip Endurance ) and his exhaust ability.

It might also be worth trying the Recover action on Clones more often than Rebel or Imperial players have had to in the past. Also not sure how feasible it is to keep your clones within Obi's or Rex's command bubbles for panic mitigation but from reading the forums it sounds like you want to keep all of your clones close to each other so while they may be suppressed, they shouldn't panic too easily.

Recover options seem like a bad idea.
