Veteran Wing leader question

By Silver_leader, in X-Wing

I wonder: in the quick builds, we see the general grievous is flying a Belbullab-22 and being Veteran wing leader.... with Vultures as wingmen. Same as Plo Koon with Torrent as wingmen.

In the card it is clearly stated that the wingmen should have th esame ship as the wing leader. Is that an error ?

If that so, the Agent of the Empoire and First order Elite cards are clearly superior, because you can field a silencor with TIE as wingmates.

Can you put Z--95s as wingmates of Wedge ? With the actual desciption, no. With the quickbuilds, it seems so.

Quickbuilds ignore card text and usual listbuilding restrictions.

So no. Follow the rules in the card.

Understood. I just don't know why TIE/FOs can use the same maneuvers as a Silencer, but you can't do the same for all the factions. it's the same thought that you can do RZ-2 maneuvers with a T-70.

Also, Grievous has advantage to be a flanker, not a squad leader, because of his title AND his ability. I don't understand why strategically FFG put him in squad leader, except for the thematic idea.

In epic there is so much fire incomming that aces get shredded to pieces the first round of combat. By giving him a wing you can protect him a little longer. Even a Small wing of 2 vultures is potential 6 aditional hip points. In epic is better to think on elements (groups of ships) instead of singles. So if you want to have some flanker a single ship will not be enough, you need a flanker wing. In that role grievous with some vultures as shield is a good tactic.

I still don't have my epic battle kit, but can anyone post all the wing leader cards?

I see your point. and I understand the idea. Thanks.

Aside from quick builds breaking the rules, I wouldn’t be surprised to see unique Wing Leader cards for the prequel factions at some point, since both have established swarm ships (which seems to be the logic behind Agent of the Empire). Hopefully we’ll get huge ships for both factions within a year or two, and we might see such a card in those expansions.

Select Epic/Huge in first drop-down, Epic Battles in second. The full list of wing cards are: Veteran Wing Leader (x4), Agent of the Empire, and First Order Elite.

And for ease of reference:

Thematically in the films (can’t speak for cartoons) there are prominent examples of Vader escorted by TIE/ln and Kylo by SFs. I can’t recall, for example, an X-Wing being escorted by A-Wings (willing to be corrected!). In game they have to do the same manoeuvre to stay in formation. Agent of the Empire and First Order Elite are a little more expensive and unique when compared to Veteran Wing Leader to perhaps compensate for this boost. Well that’s my take.

And while Vader or Kylo might pull off a maneuver the poor tie fighter pilots can't do... Would you be the one to tell a Sith Lord "No sir, I'm not following you." Or would you do your absolute best to try keeping up?

I'm honestly surprised they didn't have a "General of the Republic" card with with a Delta-7 wing leader and Torrent wingmen, especially since it's in a QB.

There might be, later on. But for now it's only Galactic Empire and First Order that can do mixed wings.

Double post. My browser is being screwy today.

This is like what they said on stream:

"How do the TIE Fighters keep up with a boosting Inquisitor or Vader with Afterburners?"

"Because they know better than to fall behind!"

There's also a lack of Republic-only or Separatist-only Epic cards in general. Thus my theory that those kind of things will come out only once we get Prequel huge ships.

i was in doubt if more had been revealed because I remember reading in one of the manuals something like a "Red Squadron Leader"....maybe I was just sleepy

Partly the potential to give a TIE fighter wing boost (via a TIE/v1 or TNE/vn wing leader), and partly the potential to give expensive 'aces' extremely cheap 'cannon fodder' - TIE/ln give the Empire bonus hit points at less than 8 points a hit, and TIE/fo do the same for the First Order at less than 7 - far, far better value than if you had to buy 51 point Sienar-Jaemus Engineers as wingmen....

There is a Red Squadron quick build with Luke and 1 to 5 Red Squadron Escorts. They teased this in one of the Epic Battles articles as “flying Red Squadron”... maybe that’s what you are remembering?
