Coming back inot the game and overwhelmed by 2.0

By voltagejim, in X-Wing

I had kinda gotten out of the game right when 2.0 was dropping. I had bought 1 of every expansion up to the point where Guns for hire was released (although I never bought any epic ships). My buddy bought the game last week and has been begging me to play and I finally brought my stuff over. I was overwhemled with how much had changed. I had bought the Empire conversion kit when it first came out, and I really hadn't opened it until tonight when me and my buddy played our match. I felt like I didn't get a 1:1 replacement of every card that I got when I bought all of these Empire expansion packs for wave 1. Also all of the tokens are different looking now. I was constantly borrowing tokens from my friend.

Now I kinda want to get back into the game and get the rest of the expansions that have come out, but I am wondering what you guys would do. Either: Sell all of my wave 1 stuff and then re-buy every expansion as wave 2 (have they re-released every ship as wave 2 yet, like the Aces and Veterans packs?)

OR

Just keep what I have, buy the Rebel, FO, and Resistance conversion kits, then continue buying the expansions where I left off, but just getting the 2.0 versions.

I wanna say go with the second option, BUT the game design has been refocused so you don't have to buy everything that comes out to GET everything that's come out. You may want to focus on a single faction unless you're a collector and have to buy everything (not judging, I fall into that category). Go with the conversion kits and the new core set if you want to update what you have. You can always fill out the kit with second hand 1.0 models. If you're an Imperial or Rebel player, you'll also want the core set for the pilots and a handful of upgrades that currently ONLY come in that.

Welcome back to the game. To your question - definitely keep what you have. Far fewer ships have been rereleased than those that haven't, so an existing collection + conversions is much better than rebuying. It'll be a long time yet before all of 1.0 gets a fresh 2.0 release.

Regarding the cards from the kits - yes, the conversion kits are a bit odd in the card contents. There are some cards (Afterburners comes to mind) that weren't in the kits at all, so were only in the 2.0 core at launch. It's been reprinted in a number of expansions since then so you may be able to trade or buy that on the secondary market.

Regarding tokens, the old ones are still legal to use, even in tournaments, just as long as you remember the colour and shape of the 2.0 version for rules purposes. The conversion kits are notorious for their lack of shield tokens; you can make 1.0 shield tokens compliant by using a red Sharpie on one side, or just use them 1.0-style (removing them when lost instead of flipping) and nobody will mind unless you play in a high-level tournament. Edit - I forgot to mention, there have been some new tokens introduced since 2.0's launch (like Strain). You're not expected to have those unless you bring something that uses it.

hi Jim! personally I feel like Resistance and First Order are the most fun factions in this game right now. if you have all the ships for those two factions, those conversion kits are a steal.

I like those factions for a number of reasons. listbuilding those two factions is less frustrating than the others because you have everything you need in a conversion kit, and everything's currently legal in all formats (none of the other factions have both these things). those two are also the cheapest conversion kits. finally, those two factions are very well internally balanced so although there's less options, none of the options feel truly terrible.

a final note, I would not recommend collecting all the factions, pick one or two to stick with. I collect all of them and play X-Wing pretty regularly and I still feel like I don't really use most of my stuff and would be fine with just my FO stuff and maybe a squad or two from a couple other factions.

Yeah just get the core set and conversion kits, and go from there. Selling your old ships and rebuying will just lose you more money.

I would take it slow at first and get the lay of the land before making any big moves.

If you’ve already got a good 1.0 Empire collection and a 2.0 conversion kit for it—that’s great! Maybe just supplement that with a core set, and then fly a bunch of diverse Empire lists to figure out what you like and dislike about 2.0. If it helps: I’ve found 2.0 to be a much tighter game in general, though some ships feel different enough to no longer appeal in quite the same way. And usually you don’t need as many upgrades per ship to be viable.

If I were you I'd take it slow. You already have the Empire kit? Start playing! There might be a card or two you'd want (Passive Sensors, Hate and Diamon-Borons spring to mind), but for the most part you already have everything you need, and you'll get those in the upcoming card pack anyway. When you want a chance of pace (or feel like trying a new ship, like the Resistance A-Wing or First Order Interceptor), get the next one.

I want to focus on this point because I think it might be a important to address your expectations.

Second Edition is a different game. A lot has been changed and rebalanced to fit new mechanics. It is never going to be, and was never intended to be, a 1:1 swap for first edition.

Not every pilot or upgrade carried over to Second Edition. Some because they were now redundant with new mechanics, some because they were identified as being too powerful or game warping and some just because FFG wanted to pivot some ships in different directions or to fill different niches.

I can understand being disappointed that you now only have two named TIE Interceptor pilots where previously you had seven, for example, but the Interceptor is something of an anomaly. Most ships didn't lose that many pilots.

Don't assume that everything from first edition will be in second. The Aces and Veterans expansions from first edition you mentioned existed to fix problems with certain ships that weren't balanced right. Such packs aren't necessary in second edition where the point costs can just be changed instead, so those packs won't be getting re-released in second edition.

They DO exist!

How many of them were playable, though? ;)

Honestly, I'm a little disappointed with the 2.0 Interceptor. Soontir Fel is still the only real choice, with Turr Phennir and the generics being interesting, I guess, but ultimately without a proper place in the game. Whenever I'm thinking I might put together a squad, I ultimately go with one of their Striker equivalents instead.

Converting is REALLY REALLY EXPENSIVE.

I had 1 of most 1.0 ships and swarms of A-wings, Scyks, etc. I recently converted my Empire and Scum fleets (but not my rebels, FO, or Resistance). that so far has cost me over $250 dollars. if i buy all the card packs and convert my other 1.0 ships its another 200+ dollars. ... to play my existing models. so thats something to consider. youre looking at $40 base game, $50 or $30 per faction, plus card packs, and swarms will require a second conversion kit.

If you buy all new, its a lot more per a ship now ($20 to $50 for a single ship) so youre probably better off converting.

The new factions though are waaay better value. for example you can buy a Republic starter, ARC-170, and Annakins interceptor and the Naboo starfighter for $110 and have multiple good lists to choose from.

Either way X-wing is went from $ to $$$ with 2.0

I have found converting to be the best route for my needs. I got one of each original conversion kit, then went to ebay for extra cardboard for my surplus of TIE Phantoms and Gunboats.

This plus occasional new 2.0 model (and the two prequel factions) has been all of my 2.0 spending.

However, I am not a swarm player. I tend to fly a bunch of different ships in the same list (except for Phantoms and Gunboats apparently), so the lack of redundancy did not negatively affect me too much and I'm glad I didn't have to pay extra to convert 8 z-95s when I only own 2.

So, I just got back in about 2 months ago. The game is way better. So, don't sell anything (yet}.

My recommendation would be to get the FO and Resistance kits first, for a couple of different reasons:

1. They are less expensive, so it's a cheaper way to get your feet wet.

2. Those factions are getting new content. You can grow them as 2.0 factions.

3. IMHO, the Rebel conversion kit was the lamest in terms of converting your collection. Why they gave you multiple dials for YT-1300, YT-2400, Ghost and its shuttles instead of more snubfighter dials is beyond me. OTOH, that also kinda makes it the easiest kit to split with a buddy, if you can.

Converting is still the worst part of 2.0 (and the epic stand fiasco hasn't made it better  }, but 2.0 is LIGHTYEARS ahead of 1.0 in terms of gameplay.

Thanks for the replies everyone! After reading through them I will go with keeping my stuff and just buying conversion kits and new expansions as the 2.0 versions (Sadly I am also a collector and so the collector/OCD in me must buy every expansion haha). Luckily, I just play very casually against my friend now so no tournaments. Sucks to hear about the aces and veterans packs not really coming over to 2.0. I remember there were some good pilot cards I used to use against another friend in those. I think right now I am going to just gather all my 1.0 cards and such and quarantine them off for now haha. One other side questions:

I am also thinking of picking up Armada and Imperial Assault. Are those expected to have a 2.0 version come out? If so I will wait for that as I currently do not own either of those games.

Imperial Assault is said to have no more miniature support for the foreseeable future. Meaning it is sorta finished and barely supported currently. Latest releases were only skirmish maps and things for the app.

Armada is not likely to get a 2.0 in the near future. It has good balance, every ship has its use. Of course some are better than others, but overall very decent balance. Release rate of Armada is much slower compared to X-wing and Legion. December should see 2 new ships released and then it's waiting time for Clone Wars to hit Armada for next release. Which is planned for Q4 2020. They say releases should up a bit after that to support the new factions.

Armada is a great game, but sadly reprints are not done often by FFG so a lot of ships are hard to get at times until they are finally reprinted. Making it harder to collect. Took me over 2 years to get all expansions at least twice and via many different shops.

Also, until the Upsilon gets re-released, isn't the FO kit the only way to get Biohexacrypt Codes?

Yes that is correct

biohex is also FO only anyway though

Me, I'm hoping Snap Shot gets released with a Rebel Alliance ship. I want that card, but I don't want to buy Galactic Republic ships to get it.

Great, as I said. I'm not interested in the Republic or Separatist factions at all, so didn't want to be forced to buy those ships.
